MWGallaher, shouldn't this have read three different Earths? Sandman and Dr. Fate were from Earth-Two.

What's wrong with this cover? (...) Uncle Sam's hat should have flown off his head when he's running that fast.

What's wrong with this cover? (...) Uncle Sam's hat should have flown off his head when he's running that fast. I've always thought that Uncle Sam's hat was representative of why DC's Freedom Fighters were such an inelegant and awkward appearing team. You've got: One guy in a clunky hazmat suit that has to be shown taking off his glove to do anything cool. One guy too small to be seen in group shots. One flyer in a costume that would snag every tree branch and antenna he came near. And one old guy in a top hat that looked like it should be falling off in every action scene. Then you make them all into poor immigrants to Earth-1 who can't afford cool toys like team jets so they race into action with the two flying characters clumsily lugging the other guys along in their arms.

It's representative of everything that's wrong with corporate buy-outs. The DC Universe is way too crowded. DC had no business buying out Quality or Charlton... and Disney had no business buying out Marvel, The Muppets, Star Wars, etc...
ANTI-TRUST laws need to be enforced in this country. (Among many others.)

It can be good or bad, depending on the plans the buying company has. I would never have heard about the Quality and Charlton characters if not for the buyouts. But Marvel bought Malibu and buried those characters. It's a shame.

But Marvel bought Malibu and buried those characters. It's a shame. Yeah, I think there's a difference between: 1. Disney buying up all the successful franchises to dominate entertainment. 2. DC buying up defunct franchises and giving them new life. 3. Marvel buying up a company just for the coloring and lettering tech and the production staff. Of the three, I have absolutely no problem with DC buying Charlton's characters and the Quality characters. They saved them from a limbo they would still be in today. Conversely, they denied them the sweet release of being Public Domain. With the Marvel/Malibu thing, eh... that's their prerogative. Companies do that all the time to absorb people and technology, but dissolve the actual company.

I haven't had a chance to watch/listen to it yet, but there's a new Alex Toth in Depth episode up, this time Paul chats with Mark Chiarello about Toth...
I hope to get to this later today or tomorrow.

I have no problem with DC buying properties and using them... some have worked will, some less well, but it makes sense.
Marvel buying Malibu, then later CrossGen, and just putting the IP in a drawer makes no sense to me. Why the heck is there not an Abadazad cartoon on Disney Plus right now... I guarantee it would garner more interest than a remake of Turner and Hooch.

Jim Mooney was born 102 years ago today. Mooney always had a style that put me at ease. I can’t explain it but his characters always had a beautiful appearance and he was a master at facial expressions.

He was also an inker that made everyone look good. I think his inks on Romita in Spider-Man were as close to Romita's own as you would see.

I agree that Jim Mooney is a very underrated artist and inker. Loved him him on the various Spider-Man titles and Marvel Team-Up and Marvel Two-In-One.
Also, I think Al Milgrom on pencils and Jim Mooney inking is a very underrated combo.
