there's a big difference between a proposed strip and it almost existing. Just because Kirby proposed it and did some samples, there's no indication it was ever given serious consideration by Ruby Spears or that they even talked to any of the syndicates about the possibility of such a strip as far as I know. -M I can't see much of an opportunity. Thundarr was around 1980--had any successful adventure strips been launched in the previous 10 years that wasn't already a massive popular property like Star Wars, Batman, or Superman? I think it was more Kirby looking for another chance to get the security of a gig doing a syndicated strip, so did some samples to see if there was interest than the animation studio seriously considering trying to get a spot in syndicates. In '79 I think, he had dome work on a strip adaptation of Disney's Black Hole... so I can see him still mulling the possibility with Thundarr in that time period. -M

The entire Black Hole adaptation was printed in Italy and maybe a few other European countries... Only a portion of it was printed in an issue of Disney Adventures digest in the 2000s ( ). The adaptation printed in America was drawn by Dan Spiegel. I always thought it was weird they did an American and a European version. I would kill for a full edition of Kirby's version.

Tom Scioli posted this on the bird app, samples form proposed Thundarr the Barbarian comic strip that Kirby did and Scioli recently colored... Scioli's tweet-M Not to doubt Scioli, but those look more like storyboard sketches to me. Was there actual continuity in the art, or is he just really cropping in?

They are definitely just pencils without inks. So tonebone is probably right.

Saw this piece done by artist Mike Del Mundo... and it reminded me that View Master reels were my introduction to many Marvel heroes. I got reels featuring Captain America (Sleeper storyline from TOS), Thor (a battle with Grey Gargoyle from some SA Marvel book) and Iron Man (TOS 57 with Hawkeye and Black Widow) for Christmas when I was either Pre-K or Kindergarten Age, and experienced those characters through those Reels before I ever saw or read any of them in a comic book. -M

This interview with Buscema from 2001, recently posted on YouTube, is also interesting in this regard - as, among other things, he talks about some of the stuff Evanier mentioned:

Saw this piece done by artist Mike Del Mundo... (...) Man, it's so cool that Cyclops had a custom-made ruby quartz Viewmaster visor.

Cover dated forty years ago today, would a goalkeeper really be allowed to wear a hat like that during a game? I should e-mail the FA and ask them if hats like that are allowed during games!

I’ve had to cancel my combination subscription of 2000 AD and the Judge Dredd Megazine. Needs must.
It’s £15.50 a month for both titles. The former is weekly, the latter is monthly. Now, £15.50 is cheaper than the shop price, but it’s still a huge chunk of money for a person with a variable income like mine.
Also, 2000 AD is 32 pages. It can be read in a short time. It’s not 1989 anymore, when it was 32p. 32 pages a week sounds good, but when an individual copy costs £3.99, or slightly cheaper if subscribing, well…
As for the Megazine, just a personal preference, but I wish it could be pure, unadulterated Dredd. It often isn’t. Devlin Waugh does not interest me. Partial reprints of vintage UK strips are fine, but they are partial so that you’ll buy the complete volumes.
I’m not saying the mag should be Dredd story after Dredd story. We’d all get bored of that. But I wish it could be as Dredd as possible. I mean, in Dredd’s world, you’ve got the Special Judicial Squad (akin to Internal Affairs in our world) and an undercover squad. Why not give them strips? Or a permanent slot for other world judges? Or a permanent slot for Judge Anderson of Psi-Division? Just seems that more often than not, I’m wading through Devlin Waugh and other strips that don’t interest me.

According to some sites, this comic went on sale 45 years ago today: This was reprinted in increments in one UK title (can’t recall which one, there were so many reprint titles, mergers, etc). I only read a little bit of it. In my humble opinion, of what I did see (just a few issues), this was my favourite Jack Kirby work.

I can't justify the price of the Meg since I'm not interested in the reprint books that come with it, but I used to subscribe to 2000AD. I cancelled when they started doing regular kids issues every couple of months since I could save money by not subscribing and skipping them. There's also the added benefit of being able to buy a copy in excellent condition from the newsagent, whereas my old sub issues were often beaten up in the post by the time I got them.
