The irony is that Stallone never served in the Armed Forces, in any capacity. He was in college and taught classes, in some form, during Vietnam. I haven't seen definitive evidence of whether he had a deferment or whether his facial paralysis would have medically disqualified, though I wouldn't think so, unless his eyesight was also affected and he has never mentioned anything like that. Physically, he would have been 1A, other than the partial facial paralysis. The ship I was on had a sailor assigned to it, who was on the Navy Boxing Team, and was never aboard, because he was always training or competing. He was placed with us for administrative purposes, to handle his pay and records. E-5 seems a little low, for an instructor billet, though drill instructors were often E-5s. It would have been great if they had been able to carry through the idea, as with Slaughter, and integrate him into the comics and cartoon. I can just see a punchy Rocky muttering something and randomly yelling, "Yo, Adrian......er, Yo JOE!" Absolutely! Be even better if Clubber Lang, Ivan Drago and Tommy Gunn joined COBRA.

The further irony is that Sgt Slaughter was never in the Marine Corps, nor did he serve in any other branch. Bob Remus didn't even start out doing the Marine DI gimmick; he wrestled in the AWA, under his own name (he was trained in one of Verne Gagne's camps) and as Super Destroyer Mark II, under a mask, managed by Lord Alfred Hayes (Hayes was a manager, after winding down his in-ring career, before becoming a commentator and interviewer, for the WWF).

The first issue of Marvel UK’s Dragon’s Claws was released on this day 35 years ago: I’m afraid I have not read it. It’s on my radar (and has been for 35 years!). I can’t find any artist credits for the covers, either. I know it was created by Simon Furman and Geoff Senior. International Hero has an entry on them: www.internationalhero.co.uk/d/dragclaw.htm
This looks more like a parody of something I've never heard of than an actual comic.

Batman was a lot more relatable in 1940, but he was still capable of doing things no normal man can bring himself to do:

This very well could have been posted already on the CCF but this interview of Stan Lee by Marc Bolan (!) is new to me: I was looking over older entries and stumbled her, and didn't see anyone catch this: that notation, " A Bullpen Special, by Neil Tennant".... Lead singer of The Pet Shop Boys (on the left). Tennant was an editor at Marvel UK, then was working at Smash Hits, when the duo finally broke into the big time.

Neil Tennant was also the source of David Tennant's screen name. David Tennant's original surname is McDonald. After discovering that there was another David McDonald already represented by the actor's union Equity, he created his stage name by adopting the surname of Pet Shop Boys frontman Neil Tennant, whom he had seen in Smash Hits magazine while deciding on a new name. He later legally changed his urname to Tennant to comply with rules set by the American Screen Actors Guild.

"Opportunities" does pretty well sum up the comic book industry.....
