Bill Wray, who's done hundreds of books for DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, etc, and been lead artist to countless kid TV shows, such as Ren and Stimpy or Dexter's Laboratory... Bill Wray may be the best "fine artist" to work in comics since Jeff Catherine Jones.

Frank Hampson, creator, writer and artist of the Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future strip (amongst other things). His is an impossibly obscure name to American comic fans, but even here in Britain -- where Dan Dare is something of a cultural icon -- comic fans (unless they're 60-something fans who read Eagle back in the day) probably won't have ever heard of him. In short, he's criminally underrated. The gorgeous, painted artwork in the strip -- with its post-war, "future retro" aesthetic -- is easily enough to place Hampson near the top of any "underrated comic creator" list. But the stories and the brilliantly relatable characters that populate Dan Dare really seal the deal. If you're a classic comics fan and you've never read any of Frank Hampson's Dan Dare, do yourself a favour and pick up one of the reprint volumes.

Yeah, MDG, thanks very much for the link to Wray's painting work. That stuff is brilliant.
By the way, kirby101, did Santos actually do anything for Charlton? I'm only familiar with his Gold Key work.

I know Ken Steacy and John Byrne are both very big fans of Frank Hampson. There's a fannish zine-comic with new old school Dan Dare stories and articles called Spaceship Away, it's been around for quite a long time but not sure if there's been a new issue in a year or so now. Very high quality magazine. My interest in Gerry Anderson and classic Doctor Who fanzines made me rub elbows with Dan Dare/Eagle comic fandom or I'd have no idea of it's existence.
Interesting about Owen Fitzgerald, a bit of a Kurtzman quality to the Starlet O'Hara page. Did he ever work for Marvel circa 1949?

Completely agree about Tony Salmons !
He has done very little work but it's excellent.

Completely agree about Tony Salmons ! He has done very little work but it's excellent. Wow, you're right I thought he had done much more, but I now see he's barely done 60 issues in his career! I have most of those and hoped for much more to discover... I actually have an issue of Wasteland drawn by Salmons and inked by Bill Wray (or vice versa, not clear), with an additional story drawn by William Messner-Loebs, haha
