Speaking of Tom Sutton, my favorite cover of his is this issue of Ghostly Haunts-I had the Modern Comics reprint of it as a kid and it gave me nightmares, to the point I was actually afraid to pick up the comic, now I just love the creepiness of it. -M

^^ I love horror comic covers. Actually, I've a bit of a soft spot for old horror comics generally, but the covers are almost always really striking.

Speaking of Alex Toth, he wouldn't qualify as under-recognized, but I wonder of Jerry Grandinetti would? He did the occasional non-war SF comic which I really admired! Looks like he did a Sub-Mariner story at least once too. Sometime ago I was reading the Namor Tales to Astonish stories (as collected in the Sub-Mariner Essential vol. #1) and in between the Adam Austin (Gene Colan) issues and the Bill Everett issues, there was a single story illustrated by...Jerry Grandenetti. I was totally unfamiliar with the name, so I looked him up and learned he had quite a long career, both before and after that 1966 Namor story; he'd worked with Eisner, and was well-known for his DC war comics work (some of which I've since seen, pretty great work on those comics).

The coloring was even nicer on the original Charlton printing! Apparently they had some kind of press that had been used for cereal boxes for their covers, Dick Giordano told me about it and other things when I asked him to autograph a comic he'd drawn the cover for called 'The Green Planet'... I wish I'd taken notes! I wonder if they were still using that press in the '70s as they had some amazing covers! There's a giant king rat in the Parisian sewers those weird mutants drag the lady to near the conclusion of the story that is pretty memorable, piles of bones around his throne... now that's scary comic books! Tom Sutton and Marie Severin did some great work on Marvel's 'Not Brand Eccch' comics in the '60s, I hope they've kept those in print among all these collected volumes today!

One great Sutton job was the Alice Cooper issue of Marvel something-or-other. Very MAD-looking, with nice inks by Austin.

That would be Marvel Premiere #50, MDG.
Beccabear, as far as I know, Not Brand Eech has so far only been reprinted in a Masterworks volume a few years ago. Personally, I wish Marvel would release a more reasonably priced Epic-style reprint of that series.

Have most of his work and most don't know about him
Good call
re Matt Baker - younger collectors don't know his work but most that follow the Golden or Atomic Ages know of his work, especially his good girl art

Please post a pic showing one or more examples of their work
Kim Deitch
Definitely a solid all-time top 5 for me I don't know why he doesn't have more fans - He's been working forever and did some huge high-profile gigs for major publishers. (And Undergrounds back when millions of people read 'em!)

Ve said before that Deitch is one of my favorites and pretty much the only creator whose work I buy pretty much anytime something new comes out. That said, I don't particularly "like" his art style, but his stories are compelling and well-told.

Vicente Alcazar Love his horror work for various black and white magazines from Marvel and Warren, and he was also one of my favourite Kull artists. based solely on the story he drew for the short-lived black and white Kull and the Barbarians mags:

Don Heck. I would never in a million years think that I would post the praises of Mr. Heck. I simply did not like any of his Marvel Silver Age work. I found it awkward and undynamic. Especially when he was trading off issues with artists like Kirby or Buscema. Don Heck was just blah. But the current cover contest gave me a whole new perspective, and I discovered his other work, like Westerns, Romance or Suspense comics was very, very good. So here's to Don Heck, we hardly knew yee.
