I remember the Moon Knight back-up in the Hulk magazine very well. recently re-read it and it holds up very well, IMO.
Tales of Asgard would have to be up there among my favourite back-ups. I don't think it was mentioned on the cover, or at least not every single one. Some of the nicest moments in Kirby's FW epic were found in Tales of the New Gods back-ups . Can't recall if they appeared on the covers or not. Those were in the well regarded Orion title with back ups by the likes of Frank Miller, Walt Simonson and Jim Lee. Yes, they had it on the cover, which I think is smart. Advertise it ! Frank was still looking good then.

Frank was still looking good then. Art Adams' backup about Scott Free and Sirius was the best of them. A boy and his dog stories always bring a tear to my eye, even when the dog in question is a gigantic, god-killing war hound.
Most of those backups were quite good, too. Walt certainly knew how to maximize his friends' art. What other Big Two book are you going to see contributions from Frank Miller, Dave Gibbons, Howard Chaykin, Art Adams, Eddie Campbell, Jim Lee, JP Leon, etc? Even Lee's story about Darkseid at the secret garden at the core of Apokolips had a mythic quality, and I normally don't like Lee's art at all.
Walt also had a brilliant backup featuring Kanto in the pages of Byrne's Jack Kirby's Fourth World book. It's much, much better than anything else in the title.
All of these backups are available in the Tales of the New Gods tpb and the forthcoming (and eagerly awaited) Walt Simonson's Orion omnibus.

I'd forgotten about Walt's backups in Byrne's title.
Yes, excellent.
Everyone knows Walt for Thor, and Orion should still be going IMO.
Really really wanting the New Gods back.
Yeah, even Jim Lee's story was good.

My favorite Luthor story, dupe!
Quietly and without fanfare, Dave Cockrum redesigned the Legion of Super-Heroes in the back-ups in Superboy. He did so well that they gradually and eventually pushed Superboy out of his own book and took over...for the second time!
Tell me again how Superboy is sooooo important to the Legion. Pfft.

Dominic Fortune was another good backup strip from the Hulk magazine. I really liked the Rose and Thorn backups in Lois Lane. Nemesis in Brave and the Bold was good too, great Dan Spiegle artwork.

That was my mistake - I was actually thinking of Young Gods of Supertown, Kirby's own back-up stories in The Forever People. But you're right, some of the Tales of the New Gods back-ups in Walt Simonson's Orion series were quite good as well.

Yeah, even Jim Lee's story was good. Haven't seen the Walt Simonson stories from Byrne's series - any chance they'd collect them separately, so I could read them without having to see Byrne's stories? Probably not, but that's what I would like to see. I'm always interested in anything done with the New Gods, as I am with the Eternals at Marvel, but experience has taught me not to expect much on either score. Both companies are too set in their ways to make it likely that a writer would be given the leeway to do anything interesting with them, even if there were any writers around who were both willing and able to do so. I believe I read somewhere that the New Gods will be playing a large part in an upcoming DC "event", but there's no reason to anticipate any improvement on the usual treatment, as far as I can see.

Good to hear. I have the first collection of the early installments and most of the rest of the series in the individual issues, but I might get this new one anyway. Decent New Gods stories are few and far between!

Decent New Gods stories are few and far between! Yeah, and judging from Infinity Man and the Forever People, there's not going to be any in the near future.

I loved the BROTHERS OF THE SPEAR feature by Russ Manning, appearing in the back of the Dell/Gold Key TARZAN book. Manning's clean art was always a pleasure, as I could never fathom the appeal of Jesse Marsh's Tarzan art-- despite Alex Toth's accolades for the latter.

As a team-up book fan, I've gotta speak up for the Spider-Man/Zabu story in the back of the (Stealth Team-Up series) SPider-Man Family # 5. The LEAD story was Spider-man and Frog Thor, so that was pretty cool as well.
