I discovered Moon Knight quite by accident after thumbing through this...and enjoyed it far more than the Hulk story itself which I've long forgotten.  Moon Knight was violent...I loved it...and I searched long and hard for the other Hulk zines which would continue the storyline - without luck. Finally got it in this 3 issue Special series which I also found by chance....  So what gems have you found hidden in books as backup strips? |

Going back to the beginning of the Marvel Age, when Thor debuted in Journey into Mystery #83 , the strip was pretty much a standard super-hero story. Asgard and the Norse myths were touched on lightly. Not until the 5 page backup Tales of Asgard begin in #97 did the unique flavor of Thor emerge. Not only was Asgards history told, but many of the supporting cast like the Warriors 3 were introduced in the backup. It took awhile for the grandeur of Tales Of Asgard get replicated in the main story

One of the best hidden solo Thanos story was in Logan's Run #6, a comic I would never have bought if not been told about it. There's no indication on the cover the comic contains any other story other than Logan's Run. But it's a good story featuring Drax trying to save a nameless planet from Thanos' hand, by Archie Goodwin and Mike Zeck.

In 1960s issues of Detective Comics, the Elongated Man backups were frequently better than the Batman stories. For one thing, you got to see Sue Dibny drawn by Carmine Infantino, Murphy Anderson and Neal Adams!

Where did Hunter Rose start? I only discovered him when he had mini series from DH. Hunter Rose had his own short lived Comico series in the very beginning. But Matt Wagner revived him as a backup in Mage, and that's when Grendel took off. |

I also seem to remember having a random Comico Grendel book now that w you mention it. I think it was just called "Mage," published from 1984-1986. There was a second and more well known Grendel volume put out by Comico in 1986. The original was black and white and is extremely rare. |
