I have to wonder if they flipped episode 1 & 2, and the 2nd episode was supposed to be the premiere (since it called back to things happening last season (and Bortis an his mate were in much better shape in the 1st episode then suddenly having issues in the 2nd).
so I'm thinking that Fox was a little worried about all the gay sex implications, and therefore made that the 2nd episode.

It's also possible one episode began or completed production slower than the other, I suppose. I haven't seen the episodes yet. Could be a special effects issue, a location issue, or maybe even a guest actor issue. Is Bortus' mate in the other episode too? Your theory makes sense, of course, but I'd kind of assumed Fox uses a hands off approach with McFarlane these days since begging him to come back after they cancelled Family Guy the first time.

The second episode was produced during the first season. It was held for reasons below and released this season. That is why season one had 12 episodes and the 2nd season will have 14 episodes. From Wikipedia:
On November 15, it was reported that one of the thirteen episodes for season one would be held back and instead air during the second season due to a gap in broadcast dates caused by the broadcaster's lengthy Christmas programming.[51][52] It will be a sequel to "About a Girl".[53]

^ ok, that makes sense, but still, considering in the 1st episode they are in good shape relationship wise, this makes way more sense as THIS being the 1st episode, so they could move forwards and be in the good shape they were in what was the premier.
regardless, it could not be more clear about Star Trek love, and the differences (if this were Trek? they would have found a way to save *all* of the planet inhabitants).
I love that newly introduced alien character from Engineering.. but wonder if this episode was from season 1 and held? where was Norm MacDonald's glob character?

I just find the 2nd Episode a bit odd to me but at the end of that show it's started to make sense to me and I didn't like it at first and then later on the show got a bit better and had a sense of camaraderie that I liked and the show ended on a good note. It really had that Star Trek feel and @bert kind of nailed the direction of it.

I really enjoyed the recent show that really engaged in togetherness as a family both on the Orville and at home as the Security Chief been pondering about. It was done just great and it was done with class and dignity as they trying to figure out how to deal with gravity, health, and all that.

and really sad to see one of the best characters go, but wow was that a STRONG episode.
(apparently there was some behind the scenes stuff going on (involving dating), and the actor wanted off/was asked to leave the show).

I'm not enjoying this season. It was what I feared from MacFarlane. For me the forced humor has overshadowed the Star Trek feel that I liked in season one.

After what was for me a pretty underwhelming start to the season episode three really started to nail it for me. Dialing back Seth MacFarlane's particular brand of juvenile humor helped quite a bit. Plus the additional cameos from various Star Trek alums was really cool to see.

I quite liked episode four as well. Interesting reveal and the special effects makeups were really well done.

agreed.. although I watch so many Genre shows (and read so many comics. . hello Skrull Alica, and Chameleon Girl), that I figured it out less than 10 minute into the episode . . the moment the Krill ships appeared.
I think the episode would have been MUCH stronger, if they had made it episode 8 or 9, instead of 4. Give us some time to accept the character before the reveal.
but otherwise, good episode.
and sounds like tonight's will be the replacement Security officer appearing. Didn't mind the "trunk" guy, tho he was used simply as comic relief for a couple of episodes.

Well tonight's episode (1/24/19) "felt" like a Star Trek episode. The juvenile humor was absent. I liked it. The new security officer was OK. Hopefully she will become more interesting.
