2019 Acquisition goals: been waiting for my small order of classic goodness. Finally received in the mail yesterday from mycomicshop.com. All comics $1.70 or less in my usual penny pinching grumpy old man who won't pay more than $2 for splendid old school comics which I missed out on during my youth. Some more war fun from Marvel and DC: Captain Savage: #1, 2, 6. GI Combat ($1.00 run): #225, 243, 244, 245, 248, 249, 250. Unknown Soldier: #242, 249, 255, 259, 261, 263. And finishing off my Marvel Tarzan run (no thanks to the Omnibus which was pre-ordered but never has come out for over 2 years now!) issues: #6, 8, 14 and 18. Now I have some jungle vine swinging to begin

2019 Acquisition goals: continuing my search and rescue mission for more classic war and western comic books, I was lucky to find a small treasure hoard buried away at an obscure comic shop here in town. The shop is really hit or miss as the owner doesn't really keep any sort of sense to his shop. He runs the place like he was a kid collector selling out of his garage. Every few months/years his shop changes location depending upon rent costs. He doesn't alphabetize anything, instead he usually has long tables with the comics all in random piles across them. Sometimes though you can get lucky as he buys out somebody in a purchase or yard sale and you will find some boxes of goodness, which happened this weekend for me.
He had just bought someone's collection and there was a box labelled war/westerns. So digging through and using my list I managed to find these goodies for around $1.50-$2.00 each. A sweet little haul if i do say so myself, especially when these types of comics are rare and few and far between for decent prices.
GI Combat from DC: 201, 202, 224, 236, 239, 240, 246, 247, 251, 270, 271, 272
GI War Tales from DC: issues 1 and 3
Unknown Soldier from DC: 231
Outlaw Kid, western from Marvel: 2, 3, 5, 13 (early issues with Doug Wildey art!)
Two-Gun Kid western from Marvel: 102, 105, 108, 110, 117, 118, 120, 122
Western Gunfighters from Marvel: 18, 19, 23, 24, 25, 26, 31, 32

Okay, I will continue my trend and try to pick five goals. 1. Finish my run of ASM from 100-400. Currently missing about ten issues, one of which is #129. The rest are much later. I doubt I acquire a 129 but to get everything else would be nice☺️ 2. Read more. This year was a great year in terms of accumulating a ton of great books. This year the focus will be slightly less on buying and more on reading. 3. Add at least five golden age comics. I own three currently and want more. Horror titles have skyrocketed but war and westerns seem doable and there are some gorgeous covers out there. 4. More twenty cent Batman stuff. Be it Detective issues or Batman, I want to add more of these issues because I love the covers from that time period. 5. Continue to collect on a budget. This past year I spent about $90 a month on comics. I sold a lot but also bought a lot and it averaged out to around $2 a book which is great considering some of the stuff I added to the collection. This year I want to see how much better I can do at selling and flipping comics. With three long boxes of stuff to purge, I will set my sights there and continue to try and move stuff along so I can buy stuff I want. 1. Still missing 113, 115 and 129. Doubting I can afford the last there but am hopeful on the first two 2. I read when I can...hard to tell if its more. I tried tracking my reading but found it limited the enjoyment of reading so I don't bother. Still have around 500 comics in the collection I have yet to read though... 3. I think I can check this off! I have added All Famous Crime 10, Terrifying Tales 12, Terrors of the Jungle 4 and 10 and Black Magic #2. LB Cole opportunities came up so I answered. The Black Magic was an impulse buy and cheap. 4. Have added none, sadly. 5. Still have a little over 2 long boxes of stuff to sell. Have done a nice job though at collecting on a budget. I am waiting until 2020 to begin officially tracking spending again (I lost track at the end of last year and start of this year so I havent bother officially tracking my spending or 2019). I do know I have bought a lot less though. Last year was filled with a lot of comics that came my way (an X-Men lot, a big yard sale score, a small Craiglist find, a large collection I helped sell/kept some books from). This year, the finds have been much smaller and limited to one local collectibles store, ebay and my brother having some luck at a yard sale.

One month left, and it's clear my year went very differently than what I expected. I spent most of my time reading and reviewing things I didn't expect to read and review this year while neglecting the things I did expect to get to. I guess I don't like being told what to do!
Still a month left to get to so many things, but I honestly have no regrets. It's been a year of great reading and reviewing.

Let's see how my year went? Poorly in some goals and just attempts to continue for others. While in all, I am quite happy with what I have managed to achieve. Reading Goals: Read more Max Allan Collins novels. Have 3 of Collins books at home, never opened them up, so add to next years goal!Finish off the rest of the Sharpe's series. Managed to only read a few so again will have to add to next year.Find the missing books then read series of Dusty Richards Byrne Family Arizona cowboy/rancher novels. Still working on a few more of the oldest books to track down, so likely be reading next year as well. Is there a pattern here?!?Read through the collected Cadillac's and Dinosaur's by Mark Schultz. Sadly, one of the books stolen from me this last July, so will have to find another copy.Acquisition goals: Re-acquire the Don Heck runs of Wonder Woman, Flash, Justice League of America. Have managed to get a few Flash and the JLA issues, but none of the WW Hecks. So a start but not finished.Work on finishing out the missing issues for re-acquiring ROM, Spaceknight (around 10-12 issues?) Managed to get ALL the issues to finish off this hunt, so next year will be reading time!Continue buying up any used/well loved Westerns and War comics Been an outstanding year as found bunches during Phoenix Comic-con and been finding cheap deals through MyComicShop/Lonestar. Continue buying monthly Disney comics from IDW! Sadly, IDW has reduced their Disney output and increased prices. Only buying Uncle Scrooge now since they cancelled Duck Tales and priced everything else out of my price range.Continue buying Usagi Yojimbo as new issues come out. This one I have managed to continue since Usagi went to color! YAYContinue building up (affordable) Sunday Newspaper collections of various series. Tarzan, Flash Gordon, Phantom, Mandrake, etc. I have maanged to purchase a few books; a couple of Russ Manning Tarzan's, found a cheap used Flash Gordon and 2 Mandrake books. so this will be a slooow hunt as these are normally fairly expensive and inexpensive ones are few and far between. But the hunt will continue!

I resolve to read some funnybooks. Yep. That's all. Anything else I know I just won't manage to get too. I almost failed to do this. I suspect that I read less comics this year than I have any year since 1974.

Like Slam above, my main aim (or hope) is to get back into reading comics again. I actually achieved this. I've read a lot more comics in 2019 than I did the year before. I mostly revisited old favourites, but I did manage to read some great new stuff like The New Frontier and the first half of The Sandman. I'm totally hooked on the latter, so will be continuing to read that in the first half of 2020. I'm also gonna try to complete my Tintin review thread. I'm over half way through, but I still have a fair way to go before I've reviewed every book. Nope, still didn't finish it. Made some progress, but honestly, reviewing only 4 books in the space of a year is a pretty measly effort on my part. I must really try to get this review thread put to bed next year. I'd like to re-bag and board my Marvel Star Wars run too...possibly in high quality Mylar bags. Nope. Didn't manage this.

Man, I've been really bad. No 2018 Resolutions and no 2019 ones either.
No wonder I didn't make as much headway into my reading as I wanted to.

Pretty much complete failure in my resolutions, again. Complete disorganization, combined with too many comics in too little space is my main stumbling block. Perhaps 2020 is the year to purge.

No specific goals, but as always, I'd like to make a good dent in my backlog of newer stuff - say from the last 10 years or so. The older stuff I'm not so worried about, I like having it there to dip into whenever I feel in the mood for something, but the more recent things are really building up. Haven't done well at all with this. In fact, looking at my comics reading record for 2019, I seem to have forgotten all about it 5 minutes after I posted this resolution, because I didn't start reading anything from the backlog referred to until October. However, now that I have overcome that inertia and made a start, I think I'll be able to continue: momentum is everything!
Not that I didn't read any new comics at all before October, but they were new issues just out that month or at least recently, not the new stuff I've been accumulating over the last several years (and therefore no longer even all that new, in many cases).
I definitely spent too much time on a few of those 2019 ongoing things, in hindsight: Heavy Metal, for example, which was OK, but not great.

My goals are going to be relatively simple. I am not really planning on buying a lot and focuse more on reading what I already have. Reading Goals: Read my entire backlog. About 30 physical comics, 6 collected editions and about 50 digital comics. Acquisition goals: Not much. Buy a few select collected editions and maybe a few issues of Sandman mystery theather or The spirit to fill out some of the wholes in my collection. But its not really a pressing issue for me. If I end up not getting any its not really that bad. I sat small goals and mostly did it. I did not end up buying a whole lot, in fact I sold more things of because of space issues then anything else. I did read a bunch of my backlog, but I also did at because of digital sales. I have no problem reading newer comics on a tablet and it saves me tons of space. I think with next year I might get rid of even more physical comics, although there is a couple of things I am planning on adding too.

Okay, okay... Buying Goals- Buy no more than 100 books this year. I have 2,927 unread books in my collection and should probably avoid adding to that. I did a good job of that in 2018! I probably bought a few over a hundred new books this year, but I read almost all of them, including 81 classic Archie books. Sigh. Maybe next year. I love reading classic fiction, but it requires more time than I inevitably thought I'd have in 2019. As it stands, I read ZERO books. I got about a fourth into David Copperfield, and that's it. Didn't happen. #200 left a seriously bad taste in my mouth, and I'm seldom motivated to pick up subsequent issues ever since. A full year later, I'm only up to #204. The only reason I keep pushing on is I want to see the introduction of Monica Rambeau. I've read three issues. I really do enjoy Savage Sword of Conan, but it requires a time commitment (probably an hour per issue) that I seldom have these days. Yep. Got that one done pretty quick. Sad thing is, while I really enjoyed both his first major run and Born Again while I was reading them, I remember so little about them 11 months later beyond really liking the characterizations of Bullseye and Kingpin. Beyond that, the stories didn't leave much of a lasting impression, I guess. Maybe not the "must reads" I'd always believed they were. Well, I got through Kirby and Lee's Fantastic Four! I do hope to get to Byrne's run next. Did it proudly! That remains the review thread I'm most proud of. Considering how many review threads I've made over the years, that says a lot. Nearly done! Lost my motivation to continue for a while. Got it back last month, but I just haven't had the time to get in as many reviews as I'd like. Not at all happy with how this went down. Enjoyed the run a lot less than I expected to, and really didn't feel the dialogue between my reviews and those reading went the way I wanted it to. I will most likely resume this thread in 2020. Hopefully, it will go differently a second time around. I abandoned this one. Claremont's X-Men remains such a joy to read that I didn't want to turn it into work. Plus, my girlfriend wanted to read them with me Didn't touch it. Made SERIOUS progress! Got more caught up, but still two reviews left to write. Got caught up, but haven't moved forward with the reviews anywhere near as much as I'd like to. Master of Kung Fu Annual #1 is next, and that's going to be a LOT of work. Made the most progress here that I've made in years. I'll get there some day... Still don't know what to do with this one. I've seriously considered just removing the run from my collection. I enjoyed what I read, but I have zero desire to go back. Maybe that will change.

We're at the midway point of the year, so let's see how things are going: I've been taking part in this tradition the past few years and thought there was no reason to discontinue it, so here we go: Buying GoalsPick up a copy of Daredevil #65, which will complete my run on the series. Got this book on May 11. Done. That's it. I may pick up some other books throughout the year (I'm partial to cheap Silver Age and early Bronze Age Marvel, especially Hulk and Sub-Mariner issues, and I'd be fine if I could get some pre-Crisis Flash), but that's the only book I'm focused on buying in 2019. Anything else is just gravy. I've done a little of this. Picked up a few of the remaining What Ifs I don't own, three pre-Crisis Flash issues, some 80's Suicide Squad and Firestorm books, but that's about it aside from some random $1 books here and there. Reading GoalsRead at least 1,000 stories from my collection that I've never read before. I used that term because I have a number of collected editions that I bought previously that have been sitting unread on my bookcase. However, I'm not going to keep track of them in the Reading Club thread, because then it seems like homework and I tend to lose interest in it, so I'd like it to be more casual than that. Through today, I've read 537 stories, with over 90% of them being new reads. I am keeping track of them in the Reading Club thread, because it helps me focus.Reviewing GoalsPost at least 26 new reviews in my Captain America thread. That works out to one every two weeks, which should be doable. This should have been doable, but here we are on June 30 and I haven't posted one yet. Revising this down to 13, which still works out to 1 every two weeks. Just need to buckle down and do them, but life seems to take up a lot of free time. Those are all the resolutions I'm committing to trying to accomplish. Anything beyond that would just put unnecessary pressure on me and cause me to lose focus on what I actually want to do in 2019. Buying Goals - completed the first, and did a little more on the second than I had planned. Kept picking up random issues of Firestorm and Suicide Squad, did find some more pre-Crisis Flash issues (mostly toward the end of the run), and have been grabbing random issues of Marvel Fanfare here and there. Reading Goals - got to 1,005 this year, mostly on new reads, and with 78% of them being "classics". Reviewing Goals - yeah, this didn't get done at all. For some reason, when faced with the option to read or review, I would rather just read. Might set a less-ambitious goal for 2020, as I would like to at least get my Captain America #113 review up (it's been done for a year, but life has a funny way of giving me lots to do otherwise).
