A pulp cover was posted in this week's contest.
Should that be fair play or not ?
Technically it's not a "comic book" but it was a precursor to it.
There are other related sources that could maybe be considered acceptable as well.
Should we include any of those ?
Technically, is a magazine, i.e. Heavy Metal, Epic Illustrated, Savage Sword of Conan, a comic book ?
Graphic novels, i.e. Maus, Acme Library, etc ?
Fanzines ? Not a comic book but carries articles and interviews about comics i.e. The Comics Journal, The Jack Kirby Collector, Amazing Heroes, etc
Thanks

Only Comic Books and Graphic Novels ... all others that hondobrode selected are banned.

I'd say restrict it to comic books - that way we could have separate contest-threads for the other categories.
I'd even like comics mags to have their own contest, since the painted covers of the black and white Warren and Marvel mags, and of colour mags like Heavy Metal, to me have a different aesthetic to the comics - notwithstanding all those painted covers from Gold Key and other publishers.

I chose a lot of options (everything other than Novels, Art Books and BLB). since anything that reads like a comic or magazine I have no issue with including.
Banning is the wrong way in my opinion .. if you don't think it fits? don't vote for it.
problem solved.

Comic books. Graphic Novels (Killing Joke). Comic Magazines (Savage Sword of Conan).

I voted for comic books (obviously), graphic novels, and magazines. Magazines meaning ones that are predominantly comic content like Heavy Metal, Epic, Creepy, etc. "Graphic novels" is a bit fuzzy as people tend to call collected editions graphic novels, and some are more than others (a collected edition of a four-issue limited series I would accept, but not one that just collects an arbitrary portion of an ongoing series.)

My vote for magazines is with the proviso that its for things like Savage Sword of Conan and not things like Wizard.

For me, it's about discovering new things I haven't seen before or revisiting old favorites posted by other contestants moreso than any rule, regulation or contest. The joy of participating is seeing everything posted, and finding something to share with others. The voting aspect and winning and getting to pick the next category are just icing on the cake for me, so I prefer to put as few limits as possible on it. I live with the 10 year rule because it's what the site defines classic as, but even that for me limits what I can discover each week. I'd prefer people post what they feel fits the topic/theme and want to share and let people vote for whatever they wish based on whatever criteria they have. That said, it's not just my contest, it's everyone's, so I will live with whatever the community decides. So with that in mind, I am not choosing anything in the poll because I do not think the rules/guidelines as they are need any revision or clarification. It's worked since the inception of the site. It worked for the life of the contest at the previous site, and it seems every time we wrangle about those rules/guidelines we have more people drop out of participating in the contest because arguing rules is not fun and just alienates whoever winds up being on the opposing side of what gets decided, and as a result, the contest becomes poorer for it each time we have debates about the rules or the voting process.

If you don't approve of the format, just don't vote for it maybe?

This is what I meant by "Magazines" as well. Not magazines whose contents are mainly prose.

If you don't approve of the format, just don't vote for it maybe? That's fine too. I do like the idea of having other contests, though - multiply the fun!

I thought we agreed that Fanzines were okay a few years ago. I voted for everything except novels, but I agree with Shax, don't vote for it if you don't think it fits the concept.

Foxley had posted that maybe there could be another thread for all the non-comic book covers.
Actually, I think that would work and keep both camps happy.
I love the Classic Comic Cover Contest but feel other non-comics covers are great to see too, like the beautiful Shadow pulp that was posted this week, or some of the beautiful fanzine covers that are available or the comic novel covers as well.
Maybe another contest is the way to go.

As long as it is a publication that primarily features comic stories, told via sequential panels & text , I'm all for it. That would include the Warren and Marvel magazines, Heavy Metal, Epic, Hot Stuff, Galaxia, Andromeda, Orbit, Eclipse Magazine, Omni Comix, Pilote, 2000 AD, etc, etc. I would also consider things like Blackmark, since it is an original sequential story, in a paperback form.
