A few stand out in my memory that I enjoyed. One was a World's Finest story where she and Superman team up against Batman and Supergirl. Neal Adams drew it and I think it involved an alien posing as actor. Another is her debut in Detective Comics. I also recall a two part team up between her and Robin in Detective Comics that involved something about Edgar Alan Poe and I think Batgirl was almost walled up alive. Gil Kane art on that one and she looked great! Loved the flirty stories from Batman Family too and the story where she, Huntress, and Batwoman team up. I always wanted to see a story featuring Barbara and Betty Kane. I would LOVE to see Barbara Gordon and Betty Kane teaming up. And Stephanie. And Cassandra. All those personalities! I'm thinking the villain should be … a team-up with Queen Bee and the Velvet Tiger!

I'd be hard pressed to name a single Batgirl story that I remember. Ten favorite is an impossibility. Unless we include Elseworlds. I remember liking Thrillkiller. And I think the Elseworlds Finest with Batgirl and Super/PowerGirl was okay. But overall she's not a character I ever had any interest in. Here's your chance to find out where to start with Batgirl, Slam!

She just does nothing at all for me.

In my head canon, Burnside and Cherry Hill are two New Jersey neighborhoods that are next to each other and are very competitive. Cherry Hill is kind of burned out and scary (like Pomona) and Burnside is cleaner and richer (like Rancho Cucamonga). FYI, there is a Cherry Hill in New Jersey - it's the upscale suburb next to scary, burned-out Camden. Not sure how competitive they are with each other. I haven't read the relevant Batgirl stories but your description of the two reminds me of the long rivalry between scary burned-out Plainfield (my home town) and cleaner, richer Westfield. The two high schools play each other in football on Thanksgiving weekend every year.

I'm not sure if Cherry Hill was really that burned out and scary in the comics, but it was raining a lot and it was always really dark. Plus James Gordon Jr. was on the loose a lot of the time! And also various Gail Simone Batgirl villains like Grotesque, Bonebreaker, Gretel and Knightfall were walking around in the vicinity a lot. I drive through Pomona a lot and I think: Barbara Gordon lives around here! If I was writing Batgirl, Pomona would be my model for Cherry Hill and Claremont would be Burnside. They are right next to each other in Los Angeles County.

Does anybody have any recommendations for the best issues or best storylines in the Batgirl series when Cassandra Cain was the star? I have never read any of those issues.
I will be having lunch in Fullerton tomorrow and there's a comic book shop there that might have a good selection of Batgirl from that era. (The 1990s, I think.) If anybody has a suggestion for outstanding arcs, I'll try to pick some up.

Batgirl: Year One Batgirl: New 52 I love New 52 Batgirl! I'll have to see if I can find Batgirl: Year One for cheap! Good luck! It's hard to find the individual issues (9) or even the trade collection. I think DC is reprinting it as a HC soon. You may have better luck finding the collection that has both the Robin & Batgirl Year One mini series. It had beautiful Marcos Martin art.

Steph is great! I have every issue of that series but haven't read them for awhile.

I really liked Spoiler but Stephanie Brown never quite worked for me as Batgirl.
I think I like all the Batgirls better when they're someone else.

I checked out a number of her stories from my public library and I remember liking them, but I can't remember what the names of the trade paperbacks were, sorry. But there are some good stories out there!

As I have mentioned many times here at CCF, when I was a kid reading comics Batgirl was my favorite DC character (along with some of the Legionnaires). I just loved the the idea that an ordinary person could become a costumed crime-fighter by dint of smarts and athletic prowess. I had her debut issue (Detective #359) but thanks to spotty distribution I missed a lot of her subsequent appearances. I did manage to get World's Finest #169. That became one of my all-time favorite comics--Curt Swan drew a great Batgirl--and I even wrote a letter (that was published) applauding the Supergirl-Batgirl team-up. They re-teamed in WF #176, this time the art was by Neal Adams, so you'll probably want to read that issue even though the story (by Cary Bates) is silly. Then when Batgirl got her solo series in Detective, and even though she was alternating the back-up spot with Robin, I was in seventh heaven. I only read comics for a few more years, during which time I did read a lot of her solo Detective stories. The stories were kind of simplistic but the great Kane art--usually inked by Anderson--made the series special. As an adult I bought the Batgirl Showcase volume and it filled in the blanks, i.e., issues I'd not read back then. Hoosier X , I know you hunt down the actual old comics themselves but you might also want to pick up the Showcase volume as a guide. It contains all of her Silver Age appearances/early Bronze Age appearances up to 1974. dc.fandom.com/wiki/Showcase_Presents:_Batgirl_Vol._1_(Collected)I am perfectly happy with reprints a lot of the time. My library has that Batgirl Showcase volume and I checked it out a while back. I'm thinking of checking it out again. I have all the issues of Detective reprinted in that volume. And WF #169 (HECK YES) and Brave and Bold #78 My favorites are the team-up books of course. B&B 78 and DC Comics Presents 19 both had Batgirl as a guest star, and they were both strange but enjoyable. I remember DCCP 19 being one of the harder to find of the original series.

I took the CBEST in Anaheim this morning and on the way home I stopped at the Comic Book Hide-Out in Fullerton (Love this place! I wish it wasn't so far away!) and bought these: BATMAN FAMILY #4! BATGIRL #50 to #52! (I find it best when sampling modern comics (post-2000) to get at least three consecutive issues because generally nothing happens in most single issues and something has to happen in order to be able to tell if you like the title.) I've only had time to read Batgirl #50 and I liked it a lot despite the flagrant decompression.

And I also ordered Batman #311 from eBay.
They had a copy at Comic Book Hide-Out, but it was in very nice condition and was tagged at $18. And they had almost every issue of Batman Family, but most of them were in the $10 to $25 range. My copy of #4 is a little bit beat-up and has a corner almost ripped up. But $5 was more in my range.
