changed my cover on 1st page. I know it's classic comics forum, but the Giant Size Chillers just wasn't doing it for me, even tho that was my 1st thought. then remembered that classic Neal Adams cover, and when checked, sure enough - Bats is perched on a Gargoyle. so swapped it out

Interesting how many of these covers are by Neal Adams, instead of artists more associated with horror and creepy creatures, like Wrightson.

Nice work by Wrightson, but at the same time it reinforces my feeling that early to mid 70s Marvel generally weren't as good at covers as 60s Marvel or DC.
To put that another way, or add more evidence - if something so subjective as my own aesthetic reactions can be called evidence - I think there's a huge difference in quality between this and the covers he produced for DC around the same time, as seen in the Swamp Thing thread. Same goes for Gil Kane, except in his case there's a difference in era as well, his DC covers in the 60s superior (to my eyes) to his Marvel covers in the early to mid 70s.

I don't know how much it applied to covers, but Wrightson said when he started doing work for Marvel (specifically the Kull story) "they" (I don't think he mentioned anyone by name) asked him to bring his art more into the house style. He mentioned that meant thicker outlines and more stuff in the foreground.
