Err, by the way, where the heck does Robin keep his gadgets, considering that he hasn't an utility belt..? Hidden pouches--

(still I find more sensible the Batman's utility belt, which has pouches on the outside...) Second stupid question: Robin's pants are supposed to be made of, ehm, scales..?

I pictured Gar to be 2-3 years younger, but it occurs to me that a shape shift can look whatever age he wants, so perhaps he IS the same age, and just immature? That's an awesome idea. I have a Wolfman interview somewhere where he sees most of the team as 17-18, and Gar as 15-16, if I recall correctly. I'll have to find it again. I like your idea better.

Or maybe Gar made himself look older with the original team

Are Robin's undies made of chainmail? Is that just the bottom of a chainmail unitard that's mostly covered by his tunic, or did he just feel a special need to protect his nethers rather than, say, his heart? That sort of armor is most protective against slashing injuries rather than the blunt trauma with which he's most likely to be threatened.

Tunic? What does his green, err, t-shirt(?) look like?

By the way, I found the panel of Bruce smoking the pipe in NTT #1 rather amusing. That's like what Marvel would do in the 1960's when they wanted somebody to look sophisticated. Also, in #2 it says Wonder Girl rides the air currents, but in #2 she was carrying 2 passengers. Those are some strong air currents! It cracks me up when Cyborg calls Robin "Batboy".

DICK GRAYSON: Costume, you and I have gone through a lot together. Sure hope your new wearer doesn't abuse you as much as I did.
JIM STARLIN: Challenge accepted!

Perez will show it to us in NTT #39 The "no pants" look is still odd once we take Robin out of the circus context which was the original justification for his suit, but at least the protective unitard makes sense. Now if we only knew how much double-sided tape Kory uses on a daily basis.

The "no pants" look is still odd once we take Robin out of the circus context which was the original justification for his suit, but at least the protective unitard makes sense. Absolutely. Bob Rozakis was having Dick make fun of the absurdity of his own costume half a decade ago, and even invited fans to send in better costume designs in the pages of Batman Family (we've all seen the Norm Breyfogle submission). Of course, the reason why Dick continued with this costume was marketing. And, while Wolfman ultimately did a brilliant job of making Dick's surrendering of the costume seem like organic character progression, that too was done for marketing reasons -- DC wanted a new boy sidekick for Batman. Incidentally, while Dick Grayson will always be my favorite Robin, closely followed by both the Pre and Post Crisis Jason Todds, Tim Drake got the best Robin costume by far (his second one):

Of course, the reason why Dick continued with this costume was marketing. I never quite got that straight. It's not like Batman's costume hadn't any change from his first apparition, but Robin's was virtually identical from his debut.
