Huh. So the thing about the point of being a Star Wars fan is hating Star Wars is true?

Huh. So the thing about the point of being a Star Wars fan is hating Star Wars is true? I hope you're just trying to be facetious, but being a SW fan definitely doesn't mean blindly loving everything put out under the banner, irrespective of quality. Blind devotion like that, to anything, is always stupid. There is (and always has been) good SW and bad SW. Personally, I consider the sequel trilogy to be bad SW.

Honestly, I don't know if I can even call myself a Star Wars fan anymore. I view most everything made since 1983 as just so much unnuanced, simplistic, juvenile, consumerist pablum, Return of the Jedi included. Only the strength of the first two films prevents me from hating the universe entirely.

Exactly this, and really I've never understood why it's hard for some to grasp(not saying that's you Rep, just people in general). I mean, you can be a fan of Batman and not like every book the comes out and no one bats an eye. You can be a fan of Star Trek and not enjoy every episode, heck it's pretty much accepted that only the even numbered movies are good! But if you're a Star Wars fan and say there's an element you don't enjoy then it's met with, "you're only a Star Wars fan if you hate Star Wars". I boggles the mind.

Lots of grown ups thought Star Wars was derivative garbage. Some of it is just not for our demographic.
Of the new movies, The Last Jedi is the only one I actively dislike. (And the prequels.) Clone Wars developed into quite a good show.

Clone Wars developed into quite a good show. Although I don't care for either of the new sequels I liked the Last Jedi a lot better than the Force Awakens. Both films suffer from poorly developed/forgettable characters and lame plots but I felt TLJ at least had the emotional core of a Star Wars film that made me love the world to begin with. Still, both films are definitely bottom of the bucket for me and this trailer( Billy Dee as Lando aside) does nothing to make me feel the third will be different.

I haven't seen The last Jedi, but of all the films The Empire Strikes back was a masterpiece. All the rest are okay with Return of the Jedi being the worst.

Okay. It’s a movie I’ll see at a matinee in the third weekend or so. And I’ll likely be entertained like I was with the last two films.
I’ve never been a big Star Wars fan. The first two movies were good popcorn flicks. Return of the Jedi was disappointing. The prequels were crap for so many reasons from snap to whistle that they’re better forgotten.
The real problem with Star Wars, as a combined work, is that George Lucas has the sparks of good ideas but can’t execute the bigger picture in any coherent or interesting way. And unfortunately the new generation of movies are in many ways hamstrung by the ridiculous choices Lucas made over the years. On the plus side they don’t actually have him writing and directing three more giant turds.

I liked the Rey/Kylo half of TLJ fine. The other half was terrible in so many ways it would take a while to enumerate them. The film should have ended when Kylo stretched out his hand to Rey.

No, that is 100% a thing in fandom culture, pre-dating, I believe, the current round of movies. Star Wars fans hate Star Wars. The joke is that Star Trek fans will try to see the good in everything because the fun of Star Trek is liking Star Trek. Star Wars fans will go out of there way to complain because the fun of Star Wars is hating Star Wars. '

And if it's a joke, well...I dunno what to say, except "try harder." Plenty of fans of all sorts of media franchises are more discerning than, "yay, I love everything" or "yay, I hate everything". I've never ever met a SW fan who hates all SW, or a ST fan who loves all ST. This just seems like nonsense to me.

It's weird you didn't know this. Worth being aware that "Star Wars fans are the complainiest fans of all" is a meme.
And one that feels true to me. So much complainy-complaining about the prequels, so much complainy-complaining about the new movies. That is 18 straight years of complainy-complaining.
Now, of course, for those of us who enjoy complaining about how obnoxious complainy fans are, this is a Godsend. So thank you Star Wars!

After being a Star Wars fan for most of my life, I have learned that complaints about Star Wars should be taken with a huge grain of salt. Consider:
1) Empire Strikes Back, commonly revered today as the best of the franchise, did not have the best reception when it was released.
2) Return of Jedi was much better received by critics in comparison to ESB. As a kid, I also remember that all the kids loved it because the action scenes took everything to the next level -- Luke Skywalker as a full-blown Jedi, the Endor space battle was way more intense than anything that came before. But it's now considered the worst of the OT, in part due to the Ewoks.
3) The prequels were widely criticized when they came out. But time has only helped to improve their reputation. Apparently, the kids who grew up on those films and loved Jar Jar Binks are now adults and have a lot of fond memories of those films.
For my part, I definitely think the series has had high and low points. But I've found something to like in nearly all the films, and have considered all of them at least mildly entertaining. So that means that I wouldn't consider any of them a complete waste of time to sit through. I also tend to view the films as a complete work, rather than individual episodes. I had a lot of mixed feelings towards Episode VIII, but I don't think I'll have a fully formed opinion until Episode IX and we have the whole story to see where it sits in the grand scheme of things.
