Yeah, quality over quantity. I'm not religious, but a neighbour of mine worships at an evangelical church. She told me she likes going, but is frustrated because the pastor often mentions the low numbers in his sermons (or finds a way to reference it). She told me that there's never more than 10 people attending - often a lot less - but if religion/Christianity is important to those people, then maybe the pastor should appreciate those he has rather than concerning himself with arbitrary numbers. No, that's exactly it. And, really, it's by design. In the first three years of the CCF, I worked my butt off to promote the community and bring in as much traffic as possible just to make sure the community wouldn't languish if a few key members suddenly stopped logging in one day. But once we hit a sort of critical mass, I slowed my efforts a bit because I don't ever want this place to become so big that it loses its soul. Each new member brings something new to the community, but twenty new members coming in all at once have the potential to transform the community, possibly in ways that don't sync with what this place has been all along. We've got great, lively discussion and new content no matter how often you check in throughout the day. We have all we need, at least as far as I'm concerned. A few more active members is always welcome (and that's why we maintain a minimal facebook presence), but I don't want exponential growth, and I suspect that's how most of us feel when we really stop to think about it. I'm so very glad you feel that way.

Anyway, all it takes is ONE MORE VOTER for this to be the largest Jamie Awards turnout since our first year!
And yes, we STILL have one tie. We've gotten a handful of new participants since I last mentioned it, but they just keep maintaining that tie for us.

I am a member of two book clubs, meeting once a month. And while new members are welcome, and some have added to the group, you do have some who are disruptive. Or where it becomes unwieldy. Or where you have several people trying to over-talk. "Elitism" isn't necessarily a bad word. Our book club went into limbo recently when the organiser stopped paying Meet Up and declined to continue. I took over. And I have got to be honest, I've arranged a meeting with the core group of people - and, quite frankly, have excluded the more disruptive people. I did ask someone else for a second opinion - and she agreed that the ones I excluded were right to be excluded (I'm talking about the really disruptive people who continually interrupt or try to drown out other voices). So a little elitism isn't a bad thing.

So a little elitism isn't a bad thing. I think the statistic is that is costs a company ten times as much to sign a new client as it does to maintain an old client, largely because some clients just plain don't work out and end up being a huge waste of energy, while others end up being huge windfalls. You are so right to suggest that members work the same way. Some fit right in and are adding to and enriching the community right out of the gate. Some have caused massive headaches and even driven away existing members with their drama before FINALLY deciding for themselves that this place was not a good fit for them or being shown the door by the mod team after many many many discussions behind the scenes. Without bothering to actually look at the numbers, I would guesstimate that new members work out as follows here: 80% never come back after the first week 15% stick around and contribute casually 4% get really involved and truly enrich the community 1% are a poor fit and cause this community(and themselves) no end of grief until something inevitably gives. So you want just the right amount of new members coming in, because TWO disruptive/ill-fitting members joining around the same time is just ugly.

18,905 posts ... is I'm the ultimate one-percenter?

Voting is now concluded. The results will be posted next week.
I'm happy to report that, with 32 participants, this was our biggest turnout since the first year. Also, all ties were broken. Thanks to all who participated!

Barely got my ballot in under the wire, as this was the first time I've seen this thread. For some reason, it never showed up on the Recently Updated Threads page until just now.
Cei-U! I summon the last-minute vote!

Thanks to all who participated! At first glance 32 does not seem like a lot but that’s about right for this community.

That's our second highest participation number yet.
