Netflix has announced it will has made a deal with Warner Media to do a Sandman series. I think a series will work so much better than a feature film for this, so this is welcome news for me, even with Goyer attached. -M

Hopefully with Gaiman actively involved he can rein in Goyer.
I’ll reserve judgment.

Netflix has confirmed the series, and announced it will be 11 episodes.
Good to see Goyer is just an ep not the showrunner or writer.
Neil took to twitter to discuss the show too...
he went on to say he is not going to tr to tell the entire comic series in just 11 episodes, so we'll see what it actually focuses on.

On Twitter Gaiman said that the first season will adapt "Preludes & Nocturnes...and a little more"

I'm really not familiar with any of the cast. It looks like the guy playing Morpheus could have been cast as Young Neil Gaiman.

If that is accurate, that is a BANG-ON casting for Dream.

I know Sanjeev Bashkar from a couple of British mysteries, notably "Unforgotten," in which he was very good. Charles Dance has been in a bunch of movies, but I remember him best from "Last Action Hero" as the villain with a creepy-looking eye, and "Gosford Park," in which he plays what seems to be his specialty, a louche aristocrat. At first glance, I thought Gwendolyne Christie was Kate McKinnon.

Christie was also Captain Phasma in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Asim Chaudry is a stand-up comic. He was also on Taskmaster.
Gwendoline Christie has already been mentioned by others.
Charles Dance has been acting since the 70s and been in a ton of things. He is probably the biggest name on that list.
Most of the others are mostly known in the UK with the exception of Boyd Holbrook, an American, who among comic fans probably is best known for playing Donald Pierce in Logan.

I see no way they can do this from the comic. Sandman was very much a uniquely comic work that depends on comic book techniques.

They certainly can tell the stories from the comic on TV. Whether it's good or not remains to be seen, but of course that CAN do it. What I wonder is if it will hold together as a series... The comic has plenty of one offs, and that's not really how TV rolls these days.

I see no way they can do this from the comic. Sandman was very much a uniquely comic work that depends on comic book techniques. I dunno, I don't think that's as true with The Sandman as it was for, say, Alan Moore's Watchmen. And the Watchmen movie turned out OK -- not great, mind you, but OK. Better than I expected it to for sure! So, I don't see that as such a stumbling block for The Sandman. Hell, a fan-made film of issue #6 "24 Hour Diner" that can be seen on YouTube has gotten very good reviews from the hardcore comic reading Sandman fanbase. The Sandman also seems to have worked pretty well as audio adaptations on Audible, although I confess I've not listened to any of them (I'm just repeating what I've read from fans and critics). The proof will be in the pudding, of course. This might suck! But I don't see adapting The Sandman for the screen as being as difficult as adapting Watchmen. Plus, Neil Gaiman is fully involved in the forthcoming show, which ought to ensure respect for the source material, I would think.
