My 50 Marvel Favorite Superheroes are 3-4 times tougher than my DC Comics Counterparts of which I just finished recently. I have only read Marvel from 1968 to 1998 for 30 years off and on in limited fashion and therefore it's not that easy to have them ranked from Number 50 to Number 1. So, having said that I only read Fantastic Four, X-Men, Alpha Flight, Defenders, certain solo heroes like Iron Fist, Luke Cage Power Man, Wolverine, Spider-Man, and others like Black Panther and their premier team - The Avengers. And, I tried to get back into Marvel again from 2002 to 2007; but my time off from 1998 to 2002 really took a bite of the apple sort of speaks and therefore I did not care for what I saw and therefore did not read it anymore. I did managed to catch on some of the individual heroes and I do not want to reveal them because it will spoil the rankings of my 50 Favorite Marvel Heroes for your sake and my sanity. In my next post - I'm going to reveal something new ... Familiarity Rating - 10 being High and 1 being Low. For my DC Comics 50 Favorite every single Hero has a Familiarity Rating of 10 so I'm quite aware of them and I know every single one of them quite well and therefore it's made it quite easy to rank them with some initial difficulty in ranking them accordingly. Having said that, you got to put that in perspective here and that's why they are that high and low in my own personal rank.

Using Animal Man's Profile for Example
Alter Ego - Bernhard "Buddy" Baker Team Affiliations - Justice League of America, Forgotten Heroes.
Created by - Dave Wood Illustrated by - Carmine Infantino and George Roussos
Abilities Can gain the powers of any animal that exists or has existed on a planet via access to "The Red" a mystical access to a "morphogenetic field" created by all living creatures.
Interesting Fact - Now a member of Justice League Canada/United.
Familiarity Rating - 10
Reason for Rank: Because of his abilities to gain powers of any animal (See Abilities) makes him one of the most unique Superhero known to us. He's resourceful, smart, and savvy.
I will begin with Number 50 tomorrow and I wanted to give you all a head start of what changes that I made with the 50 Marvel Characters and that's begins tomorrow morning with Number 50 and work my way up to Number 1.

Number 50 - PuckAlter Ego - Eugene Milton Judd Team Affiliations - Alpha Flight and X-Force Created by - John Byrne Illustrated by - Various Artists Abilities Superhuman strength, agility, reflexes, durability, Superhuman longevity, and Skilled fighter Interesting Fact - He also formed a friendship with noted author Ernest Hemingway and became an accomplished bullfighter. Familiarity Rating - 5 Reason for Rank: The main reason why he ranked Number 50, because I like Small Superheroes - He reminded me of Al Pratt - Atom from the Justice Society of America and All-Star Squadron. One of the savviest hero around and noted for his exceptional ability to fight his way into things.

Number 49 - SnowbirdAlter Ego - Narya Team Affiliations - Alpha Flight Created by - John Byrne Illustrated by - Various Artists Abilities Flight, Ability to shapeshift into a white-furred version of any animal native to Canada. "Post-cognition" and Innate godly potential to wield magic Interesting Fact - One time she trained to join the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, eventually working as a Records Officer at Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Familiarity Rating - 3 Reason for Rank: For her versatility and her ability to know her surroundings quite well. And, most of all I admire her for her sensibility and knowing what to do in a crisis. That's why she ranked above Puck her fellow Alpha Flight Member.

Theses two so far(nothing against them) wouldn't even come in close to top 50.
But I like the fact that I might get to learn something new about the different characters I might not have before.

Snowbird is a great pick. She's probably my favorite member of Byrne's Alpha Flight. Such a great, underrated, character. I love DC, but I've always been a Marvel guy, so this list would be much easier for me to do.

I'm a big fan of Puck. I will say that as a kid, despite being a hockey fan, it never crossed my mind that Puck was a Canadian hockey joke. I didn't know anything about Shakespeare either as a kid, but after reading a couple issues, I somehow researched Puck and figured it was a reference to the character from Midsummer Night's Dream (it may have been referenced in an issue of lettercolumn). It was quite some time later before I realized the hockey pun. I can certainly understand why anyone would dislike the character as a result, because it's pretty terrible, but the character is really cool if you don't put two and two together before you become familiar with him.

I never cottoned to any of the Alpha Flight characters and could probably make my top 500 Marvel character list without any of them appearing on it. Maybe Shaman...but that's about it.

If I combined DC and Marvel into a Top 50 list, Marvel heroes would definitely get two spots. I doubt they could get more than five. I'll chime in if the good Doctor comes across one that I like.

Number 48 - Vindicator Alter Ego - Heather MacNeil Hudson Team Affiliations - Alpha Flight, Department H Created by - Chris Claremont Illustrated by - John Byrne. Abilities Flight, Force field generation, and Ability to manipulate geothermal energies Interesting Fact - Heather is a master combat strategist, and received combat training in hand-to-hand combat from Puck and Wolverine. Interesting Fact 2 - She was originally a secretary at Amcam corporation, where she fell in love with James MacDonald Hudson, who is secretly Guardian of Alpha Flight. Familiarity Rating - 2 Reason for Rank: I like her more than I like Snowbird; but I almost had Snowbird ranking above her and because of her relationship with James - I had to admit that she deserve to be ranked number 48. It was not easy for me to place her here.

Number 47 - ShamanAlter Ego - Dr. Michael Twoyoungmen Team Affiliations - Alpha Flight Created by - John Byrne Illustrated by - Various Artists Abilities Shaman is a magic-wielder who carries a medicine bag which contains a pocket dimension known as the Void. He can summon all manner of mystical objects and potions from the bag. Interesting Fact - Shaman carried a "spirit staff," which would glow when he summoned the spirits. He wore an "eagle helm," which could transform into an eagle which served as his familiar spirit. Familiarity Rating - 10 Reason for Rank: Excellent Team Player, Sharp Minded, and Savvy. One of the better members of Alpha Flight; when I first met him; I thought this is Marvel's answer to Apache Chief of the Superfriends and when I learned more about him; this hero is nothing like Apache Chief and therefore ranked much more lower than this.

I never cottoned to any of the Alpha Flight characters and could probably make my top 500 Marvel character list without any of them appearing on it. -M Yeah, same here. I remember when I first saw them in the Claremont/Byrne X-Men thinking it was nice that they had come up with this Canadian team of superheroes, but I didn't see enough of them at the time to form any kind of opinion, good or bad, about the individual characters. And by the time they got their own series I had already lost interest in Marvel, for the most part, and was no longer paying attention to whatever the company was putting out. So Alpha Flight is one of those things that I'm glad is there, but that I don't personally have much inclination to read. But maybe I should give that first series a shot, some time. I still like Byrne's artwork from his X-men period and assume it didn't change too much on Alpha Flight.

Alpha Flight making a strong showing early on. Don't think I've ever read a single issue. May change that this week.

Everyone including berk and mars, That's true - Alpha Flight is making this countdown rather interesting and the reason why I'm starting out with them is fact the matter is that I like John Byrne's (artwork) time at Marvel during this time frame. So, that's why they are starting out with a bang! Alpha Flight
