Any opinions on the Legends series from 1986? Ostrander, Byrne, Wein...sounds like something I should read It's a little bit above average on the writing side, but among my favorite John Byrne work on the art side.

Legends is perhaps my favorite cross-over event mini series, and really crystallized my entrance into the DCU post Crisis and helped me escape from the clutches of being a Marvel zombie at the time. I had read a few DC here and there, but this series is where I jumped in to the DCU with both feet, and felt like I was getting in on the ground floor, which when combined with the History of the DCU series that followed soon after made the DCU feel like something that was both accessible and deep. It is responsible for my fascination with the Kirby Fourth World mythos and the Phantom Stranger, as it was my introduction to both, and sent me scrambling to back issue bins to find all I could of both (Amazing Heroes 100 the Kirby-centric issue that came out around the same time served as my guide to exploring the Fourth World after reading this mini). All that said, I am almost afraid to reread it knowing it can never stand up to the important place it holds in my development as a comic reader. None of it will be the thrill of first time discovery like it was when I read it as it came out, so I doubt the experience of rereading it will bring me the same kind of joy it did back then.
Still it introduces the modern Suicide Squad, has the first appearance of Amanda Waller, introduces the world to the post-Crisis Wonder Woman and Justice League and had a lot of interesting moments throughout, soit is worth checking out at least once.

I too used to feel Milgrom was less than stellar but grew to like his style, especially on Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man.

Is Contest of Champions any good? I must admit that I had absolutely no idea that this event even existed until earlier today, and now I'm intrigued. I only found it by chance, using the Time Platform function over at Mike's Comic Indexes website. Wikipedia tells me it was Marvel's first limited series, pre-dating Secret Wars by two years. I quite enjoy Secret Wars for the spectacularly dumb, superhero punch up that it is, and I wonder if Contest of Champions is cut from a similar cloth?

I thought it was pretty terrible, but I also don't have much patience for Secret Wars (except for the Doom stuff in the final three issues and Hawkeye and Ben Grimm playing paddy-cake with the Lizard and Klaw.) "Spectacularly dumb" sums it up quite nicely.
However, the Premiere collection pairs the mini with the Grandmaster story from WCA Annual 2 and Avengers Annual 16, which is one of my favorite Avengers stories as it features the quintessential Hawkeye moment. It's worth picking up for that.

Any opinions on the Legends series from 1986? Ostrander, Byrne, Wein...sounds like something I should read Still to this day Legends is some of my all-time favorite Byrne artwork. It's funny because he's always been somewhat dismissive of the series, being that he was only an "art robot" on the project. I think it has a lot to do with Karl Kesel being my favorite Byrne inker, even over Terry Austin. As a story, I think it sets up the Post-Crisis DCU well enough. The concept of turning the public against the DC heroes was a clever touch given that one of the big criticisms leveled against DC is that their heroes always had an unrealistic and all too perfect relationship with the public when compared to Marvel.

This. Also the original Contest of Champions is pretty infamous for introducing a bunch of superheroes who were basically walking stereotypes.

Thanks for the Contest of Champions feedback, guys. I think I'll save my money and not get that mini-series.

Opinions of Jonah Hex? Looking at some of the Weird Western Covers has me intrigued. Is his solo series that started in the 70's any good? Any particular stories or runs that stand out?

Yes, his original series is good, and at times, excellent. I like the original Weird Western stuff best, with the highlight for me being the ongoing plotline involving the mysterious Quentin Turnbull trying to track down and kill Jonah.

Jonah Hex is great. I like the early John Albano written Weird Western Stories Tales stories better, but all '70s-early '80s Hex is worth a look. There's two Showcase editions if you don't mind b&w versions of stories that were originally in color.

What are the best collected Superman stories? I love Morrison's All-Star, but don't remember liking his Action. I read some Johns thing (I think Braniac) and didn't like it at all. Didn't finish Miller's Red Son. Oh and Moore's stories were good. I think that's the extent of my Superman reading.
