Here you can post questions about books you have heard about and might be interested in reading if the feedback is generally positive. Here's my first...never read an issue of Vaughan's Ex Machina. Am I missing anything? I want a break from the regular superheroes now and then... How did this come up? Well I was asking some friends about books they read which had great endings, ties up everything nicely...and a couple mentioned that one and are willing to loan me the books.

Great choice. I loved it. Vaughn is one of the best writers currently working in comics. A mixture of The Rocketeer and local politics so its a good change of pace. Harris's artwork is beautiful. One of my favorites during that time period. If you don't like, ignore any other recommendation I ever make

Read the first few thread a few years ago and I remember really enjoying it! It's about a guy who can communicate with mechanical object and who becomes the mayor of New York. If I remember correctly, it's a bit super-heroish, so might not give you the break you are looking for. A great read nonetheless!

Great Topic! Ex machina would be on my list as well. I remember trying it back in first came out, but I have no recollection of it . Hellboy, Grendel, Concrete... Anything non Marvel/DC that had a longish run, really. I was thinking about doing a Starman thread...but I thought someone who's a fan might want to do it

I've only read one issue of Ex Machina that I found in a bargain bin, but it was well done. I liked it.

I've read an issue of Ex Machina, one of those #1 reprints for a dollar, IIRC. It didn't seem to be for me.

I read the first couple trades of Testament... I remember it being a bit too out there for me. It was a near-future sci-fi type setting, one of those 'big brother' type scenarios where people are all monitored and such. The 'Testament' part was they'd flash to scenes from the old testament as a.. comparison? Maybe a vague sort of retelling?
I wouldn't say it was bad, but it kinda hurt my head.

Although I sold off my collection, there were a few more recent series I kept for future reading. This is one of them Is it any good? I'm in the minority that praised that book when it came out. I'm a big fan of Douglas Rushkoff's writings and lectures. As a media theorist, Rushkoff took a possible not that far off future of a Big-Brother like driven USA where counter intellgence via online use and media manipulation are trying to make a change. The parallel's drawn from that society aren't that far off of what was transcribed as the Tanak (the Torah) is that history repeats itself in some manifestation. Liam Sharp's work was brilliant. Themes of global economics, human rights, and the dangers of technology are prominent in a lot of the writing. I say give it a go. -R

I picked up the first handful of trades on the cheap at Half Price books a while back, as I like other stuff BKV has done, but haven't gotten around to reading them yet, so I will be interested to hear reactions. I may have to bump them up the reading list.

I liked Grendel: Devil By The Deed Concrete is one of the gold-standard sci-fi comics.

Although I sold off my collection, there were a few more recent series I kept for future reading. This is one of them Is it any good? It's more interesting than good, in my opinion, but it is worth reading. The first arc is pretty weak, but the second arc featuring Peter Gross' art is quite good. I think the overall problem with the book is that the characters had to be somewhat broad in order to embody several biblical stories. You never get a good handle on them as anything more than character types.
Liam Sharp's art is really good, though. He was truly stretching himself as an artist.

I plan on purchasing at least one of the Library Editions this year. Grendel I've read a fair bit of, and it's okay, not great. I understand how he did something different from the typical men-in-tights-fighting comic, but it's just not all that impressive to me. Except some of the art. I don't know which series or the name of the artists, but it sometimes reminds me a bit of Moebius, or some other awesome Euro comic. I've read a few issues of Concrete and it seems like an awesome read. I'd love to read through it in it's entirety.
