Looking to get your personal examples of run killers. What is a run killer you ask? It is an issue from a key run or series or any run that has value. These issues do not include first issues, last issues or major first appearances. For example, Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars 8 is always missing if you do find a run from that series but it is considered a bit of a first appearance and doesn’t count as a “run killer”. The same would go for Iron Fist 14.
Run killers are just always hard to find and sometimes contain covers or artwork desired which is why they are always missing and hard to find, meaning you have to pay a bit more to get that issue to complete the run.
I’ll start with Birds of Prey 8. Rest of that series is pretty easy to get and cheap but this issue always is missing and to complete a run you usually are paying up for it.

It took me a long time to track down affordable copies of Vigilante #17 and #18: the two Alan Moore scripted issues. While that is at least understandable, I also was missing #39 and #42 for a long time. There is nothing special about these issues, and they are affordable when they do show up, but they just never seemed to turn up in back issue bins.

Although most of the run is pricey, I will say Fantastic Four # 112 the Hulk Thing slugfest. All the issues surrounding it are not expensive , that's the exception.

Several come to mind immediately for me.
Avengers Neal Adam's issues of Kree/Skrull war. Pricey almost instantly.
Starlin Captain Marvel.
Starlin Warlock.
Michael Golden Micronauts is a run killer in reverse. Almost impossible to have those issues from the start unless bought new off the rack. As back issues you had to begin collecting without his stuff knowing you had to save until afford them.
Same for the earlier issues of Mike Ploog on Ghost Rider, Werewolf by Night and Frankenstein and Man Thing. They are pricey in comparison to later issues after he moved on.

The Batman Adventures #12. Being the first comic book appearance of Harley Quinn.

Tomb of Dracula, the issue with Balde's first appearance is one of those annoyngly over-priced back issues. I think it's the only one I don't have.

The Batman Adventures #12. Being the first comic book appearance of Harley Quinn. True but being as it is a first appearance, not quite what I am defining as a run killer

I have to admit I am a little disappointed that this thread is not what I thought it was going to be. I was expecting more along the lines of what issues in a run were so bad they utterly killed it? More like a jump the shark thread. Hmm... that's a fun one, if only I can think of any.

Books or issues that made you drop a title or turned an okay run into a disastrous run of stories.

I thought that too. . and was gonna say Wonder Woman's "new costume" got me to stop following the book for a good while.

Vanguard Illustrated 2 Dave Stevens cheesecake cover takes it out of the dollar bin with the rest of the series and makes it a pricey book I'd say the same with DNAgents 24 but since it is the last issue of the first DNAgents series (the second series started just a few months later) it technically doesn't count according to the OP's criteria, but it's the Dave Stevens cover not the status as a last issue that makes it a run killer. -M

On a related note, the 2002 Catwoman series suffers from this in spades-Adam Hughes took over as cover artist mid-series and all the issues with his covers are super-pricey, but there is nothing on the insides that warrants greater demand or higher prices, so the run of his covers makes it very expensive to complete the series in single issues, while the early issues by Darwyn, the entire Brubaker run etc. are all more highly regarded for content but easily found and affordable. -M
