1940s: Hawkman (I always like the Golden Age version more than the Thanagarian version). The Angel (Timely version). Bulletman (it was a crazy look and concept). Doll Man (I like the pint sized heroes like the Atom and Ant-Man too). Black Terror (cool costume). The Shield (first patriotic superhero in comic books).
1950s: Fighting American (another crazy and over the top concept by Simon and Kirby).
1960s: Aquaman (loved undersea heroes). Sub-Mariner (same as Aquaman). Blue Beetle (Ted Kord - I always thought of BB as a mix of Batman and Spider-Man). Magnus Robot Fighter (love the future sci fi concept).

Joe Casey and Charlie Adlard did a small indie feature with a character called Codeflesh that was a super villain bail bondsmen series that I thought was a great idea. I always kind of hoped that Joe Casey would get to do Daredevil and do the comic as more of a super hero/villain crime procedural and create a super human bailbondsmen. Same kind of character would work tied into the Batman series. If you think on it, really that would be a cool premise for "Heroes for Hire".

How ae we defining 2nd and 3rd tier? Where would characters like the Black Panther or Moon Knight fall? They've had fairly long series from time to time but aren't usually considered as promimnent as characters like Captain America or iron Man or thor or perhaps even Daredevil.

Green Arrow.
I know he's all that and a Lincoln green outfit today, but 50-odd years ago, he was always a beack-up, never a top tier hero.
So was another favorite of mine, J'onn J'onzz.
Also, the Doom Patrol, Challengers of the Unknown, and Tomahawk.

I consider him a big star in the 1940s. Only Cei-U! could ever convince me that he was ever a top character.

I consider him a big star in the 1940s. Only Cei-U! could ever convince me that he was ever a top character. He was Quality Comics top hero. Headlined in several titles like the other better known characters. Had his own solo title... And my Dad's favorite comic book title when he was a kid.😀

Also, the Doom Patrol, Challengers of the Unknown, and Tomahawk. You are right. GA wasn't well known until the classic O'Neil & Adams GL/GA run. The Martian Manhunter is an under rated character. And I love the Challengers.

1940s: Airboy, Black Terror, Green Lama, Black Hood, The Hangman, The Web 1950s: Stuntman, Fighting American, Lancelot Strong 1960s: THUNDER Agents, Spyman, Inferior 5, Secret Six, Space Family Robinson, Turok 1970s: Dominic Fortune, Black Orchid, Dagar, The Scorpion, Cody Starbuck, Paladin, Moon Knight, Manhunter 1980s: The Question, Manhunter, Airboy, Scout, Dynamo Joe, Sky Wolf, Strike!, Justice Machine 1990s: The Dark, Hepcats, Lethargic Lad, The Griffin
Not all are what I would call 2nd or 3rd tier so much as a cult following. Scout is questionable, as that was one of Eclipse's bigger selling titles, on a routine basis. Airboy less so and Sky Wolf was in a back-up strip that was better than the main one.
