I am aware of the anti-Heck sentiments that were widespread back in the day. As a kid myself in the 80's, I never much liked his art, either the stuff he was doing at the time or his older work. However, I've really come around on him. The guy could seriously draw. I don't think superhero books necessarily played to his strengths and he also seemed to be one of the go-to guys when a deadline was missed, meaning he turned in a lot of rush jobs that looked worse than they should have as a result. But before the Marvel age, the guy proved beyond a doubt that he had major artistic talent and skill. I'd take Heck over any of the Image founders every day of the week:

I've got nothing against Rob except for his art. He always has come across as a nice guy in any of the situations I've seen him in. I don't know him personally but he does love comics and does love drawing.
And to give credit where do, he did indeed inspire a popular style throughout the 90's,let's not kid ourselves. In my opinion it is because what he lacks in anatomy and storytelling ability he makes up in emotive drawing. Love him or hate him his art pulls an emotional reaction of the viewer.

Can you name anyone still working in the industry that sites Liefeld as an influence? Nobody will admit it of course. Honestly it seems that style of illustration has pretty much died off, with Brett Booth being the only one still doing it that seems to get work, that I know of. Even Lee's artwork has changed drastically. I haven't seen a McFarlane image in forever. Even Erik Larsen's work on Savage Dragon seems to be almost inspired by cartoon animation these days, instead of the "Everything is metallic, even flesh" look of the 90's.

As a kid there were lots of artists I did not like, with Don Heck leading the bunch. However as I got older, while he never became a favorite, I did learn to recognize his skill, if never really enjoying it.

Can you name anyone still working in the industry that sites Liefeld as an influence? Probably not, they all completely and utterly failed. I remember when Liefeld was like the big rock star artist. The day X-Force #1 came out, my LCS at the time was PACKED. Everyone bought that issue. And then the whole Image deal, that was big also. All of my comic friends were into his stuff at the time. And as for myself, I never really cared about who drew an issue...I was all about the characters or current story arcs. But yeah, to inspire a boatload of aspiring artists to try to copycat the guy's work still remains impressive to me, if not sad. They basically destroyed that decade of comics.

LOL, when you're young, everything is faster ,taller more beautiful. Actually , I started reading the Avengers reprints and the first 20 issues or so around the 70's and he was the guy that built the feel of the team along with Lee and Thomas. Your avatar reminds me that I recently read the Essential Thor Vol. 1. Heck joins the team with JIM #97 (along with George Roussos) as inker and it looks fantastic! The lines are clean and clearly defined, almost photographic, particularly panels 4, 5, and 6:
Powerful stuff. Don Heck at his best could clearly compete with the best of his generation. Maybe you're on to something.

I know I've spoken excessively about how I have no desire to mod, but I will abuse the heck out of my newfound powers and destroy any sister "Todd McFarlane Appreciation Society" thread that may rise out of this

I'd take Heck over any of the Image founders every day of the week: Scott, I am decidedly NOT anti-Heck, just having a bit of fun with ol' icctrombone. And you couldn't be more correct about pre-Code Don. That work is the stuff of legend.

Check please. My friend icctrombone has clearly reached his limit. LOL, when you're young, everything is faster ,taller more beautiful. I have to agree with icctrombone. Don Heck was AWESOME!! (And he could draw FEET!)

Interesting. I considered Don Heck to be the definitive Avengers artist for most of my youth. Check please. My friend icctrombone has clearly reached his limit. I like Don Heck as well, he's not an artist you go out of your way to collect, but he does a solid job.

I find McFarlane far better than Liefeld myself... most of Liefeld's stuff actually hurts my eyes... McFarlane is a style.

Everybody take a breath. I love Don Heck. Got a closetful of his work. He's an enormous talent. Obviously. I was playfully ribbing my friend icctrombone. Mea culpa.

I'm just comparing the anti-Heck sentiment of the 70's and 80's to the anti-Liefeld sentiment of the 90's and 00's. Heck is a really excellent artist and Liefeld very much isn't, so it's interesting that they both were viewed in similar lights. Of course, even Kirby was bagged on a lot in the late 70's and early 80's, so maybe this is just a matter of comics fans in the 70's and 80's having absolutely no clue what they were talking about.
