I did some last minute fiddling for my list today in the lower three or four, and now I'm all set.

Finally nailed down my list and man was it harder than I thought it would be! So many of my favorite writers are writer/artists.

All set for today. I'm on a day trip to see my Grandson so I'll post it late in the day.

I'm still struggling with some final choices. There is one writer in particular, whose work I love, and in any other previous year would have been near the top of my list, but recent revelations about things he has done to others make me dislike him as a person and question whether I want to put a spotlight on his work by including him at all on my list. Others have a large body of work I love, stuff that is among my favorites, but just as large a body of work I dislike (often split along lines of chronology of their career or by work-for hire vs. creator-owned stuff), and still others have one standout work I consider among my absolute favorite comics, but I find the rest of their body or work to be average at best, and some are raised up or brought down based on who their artistic collaborators are and hard to peg how I feel about their actual writing, so figuring it out on how it all shakes out in the bottom portion of the list is still a work in progress. The top 4 spots are pretty clear cut (these are the handful of writers-not cartoonists-whose stuff I will pick up simply if their name is attached), the other 8 likely in flux until the day arrives to write my entry...I think I have #12 (i.e. the first day) decided, but I will review them after work tonight and try to lock down the contents and order of my list. -M I suspect I know the writer you’re talking about. And if I’m correct he’ll be near the top of my list. He may well be a shit person but at least two of his series’ are among my favorite of all time. It’s a case where I have to divorce the person from the art.

Despite the advance warning, this year’s 12 days caught me unprepared, as I had a big work assignment most of this past week that consumed pretty much all of my attention. I didn’t really have time to write any of my explanations in advance, and will probably be doing most of them seat-of-the-pants style on the actual day I post them. I also didn't really have any time to seriously ponder the order, either, so except for my top 3 or 4, the rest will just be chosen at random.

I didn<t realise it was so late and the contest started today, so I haven<t even made my list yet. But I<ll try to come up with something on the fly. I just jotted down 12 names and I<ll wait a bit to see if anyone lese occurs to me or I<ve forgotten someone obvious before starting, but my explanations will probably be pretty brief this year.

Was finally able to cull it down to 12 from the final 18.
Required me to take some serious stock of some scripters that I really love, some I used to love and some that I love more now than I did before.
But at the end of the day, more than anything, I'm happy to have finally written an entry and participated in the event.

I had a look at my list of 12 today. I had whittled the whole thing down to 15. It could still change. Much internal “debate” going on in my head. Which is good.
I suppose the criteria I am aiming for is twofold: writers who, for me, have stood the test of time, and the word “eclectic”. It’s no bad thing for a writer to have stuck to what he knows - and my twelfth choice is a writer who does sci-fi - but I am thinking of those who can do everything from war stories and sci-fi to detective tales.

One thing I find is that my list has a major recency bias. Writers who would absolutely have made my list 20 or 30 years ago didn't at least partly because it's been so long since I've read their work. I kept finding myself thinking, "yeah I loved this in 1980...but how would it hold up now?" In some cases that is alleviated by an attempt, usually unavailing, to read that work. My tastes have changed and a lot of stuff that I loved forty years ago seems quaint, at best, and frequently terrible.
It also makes a difference that writer/artists are not happening. So that takes care of Barks, Eisner, Chaykin (though I did consider him for his scripting alone), Grell (ditto), Truman (ditto/ditto) and probably a few others I'm not thinking of.

I'm experiencing similar problems myself and am in fact having some trouble coming up with twelve names that meet what I'd hoped would be a simple criterion that would enable me to easily decide which writers to include: if I saw this name on the credits page, would I today automatically feel interested in reading a comic knowing nothing else but that so-and-so was the writer? So I'm probably going to have to include a few names based on the fact that they've written individual things that have been among my favourite reading experiences at some time in my life, even if I wouldn't necessarily be interested in a new or previously unread book written by that person.

My big problem was that 1) the vast, vast majority of my favorites are "cartoonists" who seldom write for other artists (two, however, are on the list) and 2) very few writers make enough of an "auteurist" impression on me that I have more than a vague impression of their work, and if I had that at one time, it's been forgotten. I'm embarrassed that the name "Alan Moore" didn;t even come to me until I saw it on someone else's list.
(And now I just thought of someone who's going to hvae to go toward the top--guess somebody's gettin' bumped.)

One thing I find is that my list has a major recency bias. . . . Exact opposite, for the most part. My list has a heavy nostalgia bias. However I'm having trouble finding time for the write ups. I suspect I'll be lagging behind for the whole event.
