I’m still watching Star Trek: The Animated Series. It is so much fun! Last night I watched the one where Lieutenant Uhura takes over the ship!
She should have had her own spin-off series where she was the Captain of her own ship. Co-starring Madeleine Rhue (from the Khan episode, forget her character's name), and Yeoman Rand (I thnk that's the one I'm thinking of).

I could easily do some Gene Roddenberry snark right now. I'll be good.

Started back with my SCTV boxed sets. Just got to the introduction of and subsequent episode containing "The Days Of The Week" and this might be some of the best that came out of the show
Really, it's kind of a shame that humor of this quality doesn't exist anymore (well, maybe Letterkenny)

I was born in 1980, so I grew up on now-classic shows like "Knight Rider", "The A-Team", "Airwolf", "Family Matters", "Full House", "Growing Pains", "Cheers", "Family Ties", "Highway to Heaven", "Star Trek: TNG", and the original versions of "Quantum Leap", "Magnum, P.I.", and "Night Court". All told, these shows are a thousand times better than all the crap being offered today...which is why I don't watch much current TV.

I grew up with a lot of those shows too and, like you, I have tremendous nostalgic affection for them. But I cannot agree that they are objectively better than today's TV. The likes of "The A-Team", "Knight Rider", "Airwolf" and "Cheers" etc are just unwatchable dreck from today's standpoint. I honestly believe we are in a golden Age of television right now; production values have never been higher, scripts have never been better, top-tier Hollywood talent has never been more drawn to TV, and the wealth of choice in today's streaming TV market is simply unparalleled. I do dislike the so-called "Balkanization" of TV, with all the shows a viewer might want to watch requiring multiple subscriptions (that just amounts to a really bad deal for the consumer), but in terms of sheer quality and choice, TV has never been better.

You and I will have to remain on opposite sides of the table, because in my eyes, the vast majority of modern TV is complete and utter garbage. The behavior shown is completely reprehensible - various characters (young and old) repeatedly swearing, drinking too much, having sex with God-only-knows how many, and routinely trashing anyone who tries in the slightest way to point out the errors of their ways. That's just not cool at all in my book, and as a result I can't watch it.

American TV has given us "Breaking Bad," "The Sopranos," "Boardwalk Empire," "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Mad Men," "Deadwood," "Godless," "The Wire" and many more outstanding shows, and thanks to the various streaming services, we have quite a few fine British/Irish series. I'm partial to the mysteries like "Vera," "Endeavour," "Foyle's War," "In the Line of Duty," "Sherlock,"and "Hidden" spring to mind. As a Westerns fan, I also liked "The English" with Emily Blunt. Not sure if it was an British or American show, but it also featured Toby Jones, Stephen Rea and Ciarán Hinds, so maybe British? For comedy try "The Outlaws," "Derry Girls," "Ballykissangel," "Upstart Crow," and "Blackadder." Right now I'm watching the Granada Sherlock Holmes series from the 1980s with Jeremy Brett as Holmes. I had only seen like one episode of that back in the day when it ran on PBS because life. It's pretty damn good, IYAM. I never saw any of your nostalgic favorites, either, for the same reasons, but from what I did see of them on commercials, outside of maybe the Star Trek show, which a friend of mine always enjoyed, the rest of that line-up, I'm with Confessor . But of course the value and appeal of art are subjective and relative, and as they say, YMMV. Oh, and welcome to the boards, movie fan!

Yes, it certainly looks like we will remain on opposite sides of this discussion because, frankly, "swearing, drinking too much, and having sex with God-only-knows how many" sounds like a great Saturday night to me! I'm teasing you really, of course. But yeah, I understand that if you have a strong aversion to that kind of conduct then such depictions on TV are not gonna find favour with you. But not every modern TV show is like that; that's a far too sweeping generalisation. I'm sure you could find some great TV shows that more closely aligns with you particular viewing tastes. I mean, my very religious Mother-in-Law loves Downton Abbey and The Crown (actually, I love The Crown too...especially the early seasons set in the '50s and '60s). Not sure if they're at all your cup of tea, but my point is that there would surely be plenty of good stuff you'd enjoy if you have a look for it.

I've never looked at The Mod Squad before, but now that I have it parodied in both Spoof and MAD I'm curious. And Mr Rags gets a certain bass in his voice when he mentions Peggy Lipton haha.....is it worth the binge?

If nothing else, Linc was cool as hell. I think it is worth at least a tentative binge.

My wife and I have the first 5 seasons of Alfred Hitchcock Presents on DVD and decided to go for a viewing marathon (an old favorite, we both grew up watching the reruns on Nick at Nite back in the day). Wow that series still holds up, those early seasons are from the 50's, and while I'd say some episodes are bigger winners than others as you might particularly imagine with an anthology series, tons of great writing and acting talent overall. Great timeless material.

I've been trying to think of some classic 50s tv to watch lately, since I'm reading books and comics from that era off and on, and this is one I hadn't thought of. I saw a few episodes as a kid but not too many, as far as I remember.

One way I test out a series (and which I will now do for Mod Squad since I've never seen any of it) is to go to the IMDB entry and check out a couple of the top-rated episodes.

A few years ago, I was visiting my Aunt Kay and, as she has limited mobility and lacks the energy for anything except walking to and from the car, we watched a bit of TV. And she watches a lot of stuff on nostalgia stations.
And so over the course of the week, I saw a few episodes of the Mod Squad and The Rookies, two shows I vaguely remember from my childhood. If I ever watched them with any regularity, it’s been so long ago that I’ve completely forgotten. And I really liked them both when I was staying with my aunt. Very entertaining 1970s television.
I must admit that I’m a little more partial to The Rookies. But The Mod Squad was very enjoyable too.
We also watched Hello, Dolly! with Barbra Streisand, which I’ve never seen before. But I know all the music because this is one of the soundtracks that my mom used to listen to over and over. Also very entertaining! And one of Aunt Kay’s favorite movies.
