I've read about it numerous times in various books about Science Fiction and the history of Film but until today I had never seen the Forbidden Planet...and it utterly blew me away! I've experienced a lot of 50's sci-fi films but this film is so far ahead of all those that if asked I would have said it was from the late 60's early 70's. Everything from the effects, to the costumes and the deep, contemplative story make it just seem far too advanced to be from the 50's and yet it is. I definitely the connection to the Cage as well as the Doctor Who serial The Planet of Evil, and I can't say I blame those writers from cribbing off this story as it really is fantastic. So glad you enjoyed it as much as I did

The Forbidden Planet is one of my favorites and it's always remains a classic for years to come. The special effects alone makes it special and most of all it's has so many pluses that people can talk about it for hours at a time.

Like I said, I had read about it in I don't know how many books, so I knew the plot, knew who Robbie was(and recognized him from the Twilight Zone!) and I knew of the film's importance...but I had just never seen it for some unknown reason. In my mind it's every bit as good as 2001 or the Day the Earth Stood still and those are two of my favorite films of all time.

Due to its age it doesn't count, but I saw Earth to Echo last night and it was a blast in a Goonies meets ET kind of way.
Also, barring some unforeseen surge from someone else I think Coke wins this month.

It is just as good as 2001 and the Day the Earth Stood Still. Those three movies are legends of their times. It's usually on TCM on an infrequent basis.

Nah, I listed them but the Star Wars Christmas Special was a TV show so it doesn't qualify and Sunshine is from 2007 so it's after the 2004 deadline.

Also, barring some unforeseen surge from someone else I think Coke wins this month. That he does! Sorry I'm late to the party. Been spending more time with my family and less time online for the holidays. I'm going to start a brand new 2015 thread so that new folk have an opportunity to join, but it is most definitely Coke's turn to choose a theme for January and post it here, in this thread.

Blast. I had a few themes in mind that fit in with my own movie-viewing plans. But my plans for January involve moving to a new state and I fear this will impede my movie-watching ability. So I don't know how well I'll do participating in my own theme. But we'll give it a go.
Superhero movies
Now me, I find "superhero" to be basically an impossible-to-define concept. So I'll tell you my thoughts: If it's based on a comic set in the Marvel or DC superhero universes, it counts (Howard the Duck, Swamp Thing). If it's based on a comic and kinda-sorta feels like a superhero movie, count it (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Men in Black). If it's not based on a comic, but really, really feels like a superhero movie, count it (Incredibles, Darkman). If it's a Robocop movie, count it (Robocop 3).
