Because the only thing we need less than another Batman movie is another Superman movie.

If it's anything like Coates' Black Panther or Captain America runs, Superman will get about 15 minutes of screen time while Coates develops complex storylines for new characters he created or for supporting characters.
Hard pass.

I've given up all hope of there ever been a live-action Superman film equal to/better than Superman and the Mole Men.

It's amazing to me that there has never been a truly GREAT Superman film. We've had four GREAT Supermen (Collyer, Reeves, Reeve, and Routhe), but each film has been deeply flawed in one respect or another. The 1978 Reeve film is a beautiful origin story, but the Lex Luthor plot that makes up the second half is absurd, and while the villains in the second film are almost as fantastic as Reeve, the plot leaves so much to be desired. Don't get me started on the rest.
Give me one great Superman film.
In my mind, that means making the film mostly about Clark's life at the Daily Planet, and weaving a meta human conflict that holds high and meaningful stakes for the people Superman cares about more than a villain who can conveniently thwart the nigh-invulnerable Man of Steel or who is somehow tied to a tragic inner conflict that will make Superman darker and more flawed.

This may not be Clark Superman. Rumors (entirely unconfirmed) are that this might be a multiverse version of Superman who is African American (either Val-Zod of Earth-2 or theEarth-23 Superman from Morrison's Action run). However, nothing concrete other that Coates is writing and Bad Robot is producing has been released, but people are making a lot of suppositions based on Coates involvement and it's taken on a life of it's own. No director or cast has been attached, and the screenplay isn't even complete yet, so a lot can change between now and whenever a decision is made whether this gets green-lit, so any decisions about or judgments made about this project are entirely premature. I am completely in wait and see mode.

I couldn't disagree more. The first Superman film is an absolute masterpiece of the genre and is still, to this day, the best comic book movie I've ever seen. Superman II is pretty good too, but not in the same league as the first.

Yeah, the first two Supermans have quite a bit to commend, i.e., the casting (Reeve is the best live action version of the character I've ever seen), the extremely well done practical effects and the general cinematography, but I nevertheless find the absolute reverence for them puzzling. I mostly agree with Shaxper's assessment of the first, and I think the second one is little more that some admittedly well-done individual scenes (e.g. 'kneel before Zod' or 'would you care to step outside?') that mask a really ill-conceived story. The whole premise for Superman not having his powers for a time is ridiculous ("Oh, you want to have sex, Kal? Gotta give up your powers then...") and the ending, in which Superman 'gallantly' roofies Lois to make her forget the past few weeks is so incredibly, unforgivably vile.

Ah, but he doesn't though because in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace she admits that she remembers everything. Personally, I've never been sure exactly what the "super-kiss" that made her forget everything really was about. I mean, was it an actual power of Reeve's Superman to be able to wipe peoples memory and the kiss was either a cover while he did it or a last moment with Lois before he wiped her memory? Or was it a case of the traumatic events of the past few days making sleep-deprived Lois swoon at the kiss and then her own subconscious buried her memories for a time (which is something that does sort of happen to people who've witnessed traumatic events in real life)? Or did Lois just decide to pull herself together in that moment, do a noble thing and pretend that she'd suddenly got amnesia to salve Clark's conscience? Whatever the true nature of that scene though, it clearly didn't work, as per Superman IV. So, it's hardly the same as slipping a woman a date-rape drug to have your wicked way with her. Not even in the same ballpark. Personally, I think it's a beautiful scene.

You already got one in 1978. Sorry you are a minority. The vast majority of critics and viewers disagree with you.

I legitimately hate Superman (1978). The Smallville sequence is the only portion that engages me to any extent. I get more out of Superman III.

I know it's not a film... but if you're going to gripe about not having a good live action Superman, you all need to go watch the new Superman and Lois show on the CW right now.
