I bag and board only certain issues and collectible first editions as well. I'm very picky in this subject matter.

So, while going through my Marvel Star Wars collection for my reviews thread, I've been reminded of what great condition these comics are all in. They're all mostly NM with a few VF thrown in and the odd F. I've been meaning to re-bag and board them for a while now because they've sat in the same old poly bags with cheap boards that I bought them in for the past 20 years, for most part. I'd like to treat them to some Silver Age-size Mylar bags and some good, acid free boards.
I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what the best Mylar bags and archival quality boards are? Bear in mind, that I'm happy to spend a bit on this, but I don't wanna go totally crazy on it either.

All of my books are bagged and boarded in Mylites.(about 2000) Once I found out about Mylar and what Polypropylene and Polyethylene do to comic books as both breakdown and degrade it was Mylar forever. Started out using 1 Mil Mylites since that was all that was available(long before the internet)and they were only available from one Comic Shop about 8 miles away. Once I had a computer and access to the internet I was using 1.4 Mil Mylites which were GREAT, heavier than 1 Mil but not as thick as 2 Mil. Unfortunately the 1.4 Mil are no longer available so everything is now going in 2 Mil Mylites which is fine because all of the books I am looking for now are Late Gold/Early Silver age.

The guys on the CGC board actually PH tested them alongside several competitors over a period of time to measure PH as the boards age. From what I understand, some companies apply a protective PH neutral layer to one side of the board, some do to both sides of the board, but Gerber actually infuses the pulp with this material before it's even a board, so it stays PH neutral throughout, and takes a VERY long time to break down. I believe Hotflips is where to get them, but I contacted him once and he said shipping would be too much to be worth sending me supplies, so he doesn't seem like much of a salesman. But it would be worth contacting him, or the local LCS to see if they can get you Gerber supplies, or if you attend conventions, he does go to those.

Thanks for the advice and the recommendations, guys. Much appreciated. I'll take a look and let you know what I end up going for.

Its been many years but I used to order my archival supplies directly from Gerber's company. Why deal with middlemen if his service is available? I bought his mylars, boxes and backing boards starting the first year he began his business. Those mylars held up for at least 30 years and still as fine as the day I bought them.

I bag and board everything. I pay my LCS guy a quarter per comic to bag and board each one.

Oh man, these boxes are like the box that made me get rid of all my floppies. I hate when the handle is halfway down like that. Still might some bags and boards, since I've decided I like boards just for ease of searching.

I stopped using bags/boards many years ago. I used to read and just look through my comics often and it was extremely tedious having to take them out of bags then replace them. And with the thicker Mylar bags, there was some risk of snagging a book on the edge of the bag. Now I look at the bagging issue another way as well. I'm of an age when I find it preposterous to look after a comic better than I look after myself!

Flipping through a longbox of unbagged comics looking for a particular issue is a nightmare. If your collection is particularly out of hand and you might have to flip through three or four boxes to find it? It's worth spending a few bucks to make that less of a hassle.

I've been toying with the idea of going to a bindary to see if they can create a nice, leatherbound volume that, instead of binding comics together, binds mylars together, so that individual books can still be slipped in and out of the volume.

Yeah, I did bags only for awhile (without closing them) and it was awful searching. Plus, if the box wasn't full, books would slide around and having to straighten them up every time I opened the box was a pain.
