This is always so tough! Too many good choices. I continue to approach it as if I was an adolescent, as that was when I was most enthralled with buying new stuff off the rack.
Archie #127 -- There's a witch on the cover. I'm sure the clashing of genres would positively draw me in. Detective Comics #302 -- I've always loved Batgirl. Were I around in 1961, I'd likely feel the same about Batwoman. Green Lantern #12 -- I just adored the concept of GL as a kid and would have been thrilled to have had his simplistic, Silver Age adventures on the stands when I was visiting them in the late 1980s. Superman #152 -- They're all ROBOTS! That definitely would have gotten my attention Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats #4 -- Silly and horror. Great combo for adolescent me. Wonder Woman #129 -- The kid in me STILL finds Wondergirl and Wonder Tot amazingly entertaining!
That leaves me 3 cents for sales tax.

Fantastic Four #4 12 cents My Greatest Adventure #13 12 cents Mad #70 25 cents Green Lantern #12 12 cents Donald Duck album #1 15 cents Hmm,,cant think of anything else, how much did Cracked cost this month? Adding this all up, I realize it comes to 76 cents, but I'm sure the store has a take a penny leave a penny dish.

I don't remember when I first saw such a dish, but I think it was later than the 60s. Anyone else remember when that got started?

So I guarantee there wasn’t a “take a penny” dish that early. I’m sure I never saw one before the mid-80s at the earliest.

I was working in a small grocery story s late as '86 and '87 when I remember the owner ranting for like 45 minutes about a take a penny dish he saw somewhere for the first time and how stupid could the owners be to give away money like that. So I doubt they were commonly in use much before that. -M

Pretty sure that take-a-penny dishes didn't exist in the '60's... I never saw one until the 80's. You'll probably have more luck scrounging around in a vacant lot somewhere for a returnable pop bottle and redeeming it for the deposit.

Looks like I'll have to forego the Donald Duck comic for now then. I guess I could get some baseball cards instead,,who's this Carl Yastrzemski guy? Doesnt look like anyone notable.

My picks:
Adventure Comics #295 Detective Comics #302 Laugh #133 (anyone know why there are two issues of Laugh out this month?) Pep #154 Superman #152 Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats #4
Looking now, I'd like that issue of Thirteen. And that's a Killer cover on On Stage.
I'd want MAD, but since it doesn;t show on the newsstand, it's out of the game. Plus, I'm sure i could've gotten my Uncle Lou to buy it for me.

Okay, here goes... Detective 302... eerie coloring plus a Batwoman? I'm there. GI Combat 93... can't resist that fiery cover Tales of Suspense 29... scary monster! Fantastic Four 4... reminds me of that Justice League I bought a few weeks ago. Lots of super-people for my money! Star Spangled War Stories 102... I had a dinosaur jones in those days, and nothin' was gonna make me stop. One more. I think I'll give Strange Adventures 139 a try. Pretty creepy looking creature on the cover. Three cents left. It'll be three pieces of Bazooka, complete with a Bazooka Joe comic in each one!

It's such an important magazine and sold well above any of the Warren mags. It also fits far better than, say, Famous Monsters.

Why not message him and ask why it's not?

I would guess that part of it is that including MAD would mean including not just Cracked and Sick, but all of the other B&W imitators that appeared in the 50s and 60s. (Notably, HELP! isn;t in there even though I think all of the other Warrens are.)

I just assume they are not things of interest to him. He wasn't building a comprehensive database of comics, just one of stuff he wanted to collect, so I would assume any omissions are stuff outside his spheres of interest. -M
