Okay, I'm yer daddy. I'm giving you an allowance, so you may use it to buy whatver comics you want, but you can't overspend. No loans. If you have any leftover money, you may buy a candy bar or a pack of baseball cards. Anyway, right now it's August, 1961 (the month Fantastic Four #1 debuted) and your allowance is 50 cents. Below is a link to show you what you have to choose from. The allowance will eventually increase as inflation increases prices, but for now, you've got 50 cents to spend as you please. I'll try to keep up with this thread and maybe go to the next month every week or two. For now, with relatively slim pickings (in my humble opinion) I will be relying on cover appeal. www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/newsstand.php?publisher=all&type=calendar&month=8&year=1961&sort=alpha

Here are my choices:
Fantastic Four #1 (10 cents) Justice League of America #7 (10 cents) New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes #1245 (15 cents) Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #253 (15 cents)
Such a shame that some of the comics I wanted were 15 cents instead of 10, but oh well.

Fantastic Four #1
Batman #143
JLA #7
Superboy #92
I have 10 cents leftover that I’ll probably spend on drugs.

I'm going to go a little off the grid, because, honestly, there aren't that many comics there that excite me.
Fantastic Four #1 (10 cents) Leaving aside the importance and what it's worth now, this is a pretty good comic.
The August 1961 issue of Fantasy and Science Fiction (40 Cents). Stories by Murray Leinster, Gordon Dickson, Avram Davidson and Harry Harrison and an essay by Isaac Asimov.
The other comics that marginally interest me are:
Our Army at War #111. That's a great Kubert cover and Sgt. Rock is usually worth reading.
Dell Giant #49 (Huey, Dewey & Louie Back to School). A quarter is a lot. But 80 pages of Disney goodness is also good.
The cover on Jughead #77 is a winner.
Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats #1. This is a title that's always intrigued me.
Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #253. Barks 10-pager is always very tempting.

I have 10 cents leftover that I’ll probably spend on drugs. I'm gonna accost you on your way home, threaten to beat you up and steal your 10c. Yay, I've got 60c to spend on comics!

House of Mystery #113 (10 cents). Fantastic Four #1 (10 cents). MAD #65 (Cover dated September '61, but hit the stands in August) (25 cents).
With 5 cents left over, I would save it as part of my next comic budget.

Considering that it's the atomic age and I'm a kid, and considering what I'd be exposed to in the media and in school in 1961, these would probably be my top choices-- not necessarily in order of preference.
I was really hoping to have enough left over for that sweet copy of "Quick Draw McGraw", but there are priorities, ya know... maybe I can convince one of my buddies to buy it and we'll swap a couple of books after a day of reading in the ol' backyard tree house...

I didn't realize that Mike's doesn't have Mad past the first 23 comic book issues (weird since he has a lot of other magazines). That could very well change my calculations. The GCD is indicating it was Mad #66 that was on sale in Aug. of '61 though. Hmmmm.

There are too many great looking comics. It’s making me anxious trying to narrow it down.

Gunsmoke Western and Brave and Bold and The War that Time Forgot we’re so hard to pass up!

From what shows up on the site, and knowing what my tastes would be in '63 or so, I'd have to go with: Famous Monsters of Filmland #14 (.35) Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats #1 (.10) ... and five pieces of Bazooka.
Limiting to just comics: Tales Calculated to Drive You Bats #1 Detective Comics #296 Justice League of America #7 Peanuts #11 Unusual Tales #30
(Note that the site doesn;t include Mad after it became a magazine.)

Gee, you're generous dad, 14 years later when I was getting allowance from my folks, I was only getting a quarter a week, if it was a week they decided I could get allowance.
But assuming my interests are the same as when I was of an age to get allowance, these would be my choices...
Star Spangled War Stories #99 (dinosaurs + army men, yes please) Strange Adventures #133 (same as above) Phantom Planet #1234 (astronauts and other planets, give me some) Ellery Queen Detective #1234 (detectives, but not quite the Hardy Boys, plus that cover, ok let me check it out)
so 2 10 centers and 2 15 centers and I'm tapped out.
