Let's pretend I found astore that doesn't always promptly remove last month's copies so that I can combine Decmber '62 and January '63. I have to do this because I actually bought Batman 153 off the stands in December of 1962. I loved that cover, with its shimmering effects and variations in color of the ghostly figures. It remains one of my iconic comics, especially because of what happens when Robin and Bat-Girl are each teleported to different worlds from their mentors. When theu realize that the end might be near, they reveal their true feelings for each other. Whihc lasted until they are reunited and save the day. But at least it was a hint of possible change in their previously "professional" relationships. With my remaining $1.08, I think I would have grabbed Atom 5, Challengers of the Unknown 30, Detective 312, GI Combat 98, JLA 17, My Greatest Adventure 76, Star Spangled War Stories 107, Superman 159, and tried that new guy from Marvel and bought Spider-Man 1. Now, from the January shipment, I would have bought All-American Men of War 9 and Aquaman 8 (two great covers!), Flash 135 (that cool uniform for his sidekick!), JLA 18 (heroes galore!), Mystery in Space 82 (nuclear war!), Our Army at War 128 (war!), Sea Devils 10 (never heard of them and they look cool!), Superboy 103 (I like him, 'cause he's a kid!), Tomahawk (of course!) and from Dell, Frankenstein 1 (scary!).

With a buck twenty in my hot little hand, let's see what's on the stands in January 1963. Okay, here's what I'll buy: Adventure #306 I'm not much of a Superboy fan but the blurb along the bottom intrigues me: " 'Extra! The Legion of Substitute Heroes!' Introducing: Polar Lad...Night Girl...Stone Boy...and The Chlorophyll Kid!" Okay, so inside he's called Polar Boy but the inconsistency doesn't bother me; I love teams, so I need this comic. DC, 12 cents Betty and Veronica #88 Ronnie doing her best Liz Taylor-as-Cleo imitation ( Cleopatra the movie wouldn't be released until later in 1963). Archie, 12 cents Black Cat #65 A Harvey giant-size comic. Harvey, 25 cents Sue and Sally Smith, Flying Nurses #50 Their best cover yet (signed by one Dick Giordano). Charlton, 12 cents Justice League of America #18 A team book--I'll buy it. DC, 12 cents Green Lantern #19 I like to draw and there's an easel and sketch on the cover. DC, 12 cents Sea Devils #10 Another team book and what a gorgeous cover! Have to have this one. DC, 12 cents Fantastic Four #13 Another team. I like the Sea Devils cover better but this one seems interesting too. Marvel, 12 cents >>>>>>>>Total: $1.09With 11 cents left, I'll buy some candy (those Red Licorice Broadway Rolls are calling me ) Some of my time-traveling acquisitions: Really love the Sea Devils wash cover, but the FF cover isn't too shabby either

Holy Necco Wafers, Farrar, I had not thought about Broadway strawberry licorice rolls in literally decades! Used to buy them all the time.... one of those candies that seemed to give you more for your nickel. Ate them either by unrolling them and taking smaller bites or just shoving the whole roll in and chomping it like a giant wad of gum. Btw, I’d have given you a penny so that you could have bought one more comic!

After making the list, I noticed that not only do I have an even Marvel/DC split this month, but alphabetically the first five are DC and the last five are Marvel (which doesn't really mean anything but still caught my eye!).
Action #298 Adventure #306 (aforementioned 1st Legion of Substitute Heroes!) Aquaman #8 Batman #154 Blackhawk #182 Fantastic Four #13 Incredible Hulk #6 Journey Into Mystery #90 Strange Tales #107 Tales of Suspense #40

Btw, I’d have given you a penny so that you could have bought one more comic! LOL, thanks -- I just may take you up on that offer at some point! Holy Necco Wafers, Farrar , I had not thought about Broadway strawberry licorice rolls in literally decades! Used to buy them all the time.... one of those candies that seemed to give you more for your nickel. Ate them either by unrolling them and taking smaller bites or just shoving the whole roll in and chomping it like a giant wad of gum. Yes, it's exactly how you describe it--I would eat the first 2 rolls whole (one at a time of course )--and after all that, I'd eat the last 2 rolls in bits and pieces. Bliss.

This never cost a penny when I was a kid, but speaking of candies I haven't thought of in decades- Charleston Chews! When we'd go to the drive-in when I was a kid, my parent would let me choose one candy bar, and I'd always choose that, because it was the biggest candy bar available!

Candy nostalgia is the best, and really did go part and parcel with the newsstand comic book buying experience back in the day A funny story on Neccos...absolutely loved them as a kid (the "chocolate" flavored ones were my favorite). Well, fast forward to high school and at that point my family was living in the extended Boston area. My dad and I were walking around Cambridge one day, and we turn the corner and low and behold, we see an old factory with a sign that says "New England Confectionary Co". NECCO. That's the old factory where they were made, but I never knew the name of the candy itself was an acronym. Oh, and Charleston Chews were awesome as well! dbutler69, you are so right, they seemed huge in size, as a kid it felt like you hit the jackpot with one of those.

Amazing Spider-Man #2 (The Vulture!) Fantastic Four #14 (Sub-Mariner! Imperious Rex!!) Adventure Comics #307 (Legion of Super-Heroes! A must! They even finally made the cover!) Challengers of the Unknown #31 Green Lantern #20 (Co-starring the Flash! I'm a sucker for guest-stars!) Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #68 Detective Comics #314 Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #271 (Donald Duck is awesome!) Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge #42 (carl Barks!) Peanuts #1 (There are a lot of cool looking Gold Key comics. It seems like they've got some of the cool looking properties that used to be Dell. But I can't pass up Peanuts #!) Here's my cover of the month. Not normally on my pull list, but how can you pass this up?

I was such a sucker for war comics that I think I would have bought three of the four of DC's war comics that month: Our Army at War; GI Combat; and Our Fighting Forces. But I think I'd have skipped Star Spangled War Stories and bought Dell's Combat, instead! That cover on SSWS is too dumb, even for an eight-year-old Princeling. So there's 48 cents out the door. But I have six more to go. Ah, these/those are/were the days! So, let's try Kona 6, as I am also also a dinosaur fan. And just look at that cover! And Adventure 307, as I really like the Legion, with all those heroes. And I'm finally going to try Fantastic Four, because that is one intriguing cover on #14. Three more. Hmmm. I've never read an Atom story, so I'll try Atom 6 because I love Revolutionary War stuff and the guy the Atom is chasing looks like a Paul Revere-type. I love the Lone Ranger TV show, which means that this Rawhide Kid guy is appealing. Especially up against a kinda/sorta super-villlain. So I'll take a flier with RK 110. I hate making that final choice, but okay. I'm going with something really new: M etal Men 1. It's a team, it reminds me a little of the Legion, and there's no JLA this month. My last dime and two pennies will take this one home with me.

HOW COULD YOU PASS UP DINOSAUR D-DAY!?!? As much as I loved the dinos, even the eight-year-old moi thought that particualr megacephalic dinosaur just didn't look scary enough. No worries, though. Years later, I bought it somewhere.
