The Metal Men are hilarious.
Doc Magnus and Tina are the best comic-book couple of the 1960s.

(And by “best,” I mean “most entertaining.”)

Amazing Spider-Man #2 (Ok, now I can pick it up) .12 Brave and the Bold #47 (Intriguing cover, but I'm more interested in the Secret Sportsman story) .12 Strange Tales #108 (looks more interesting than this months issue of the FF) .12 Metal Men #1 (It's a first issue, might as well try it out) .12 Uncle Scrooge #42 (Always a safe bet for good stories) .12 Richie Rich #17 (Same premise as Scrooge, but a bit less serious) .12 War Heroes #2 (the obligatory educational comic so I can convince dad that these comics are worth it) .12 Walt Disney's Comics and Stories (the Mickey and Goofy story looks pretty good) .12 Gorgo #12 (looks like another giant monster battle) .12 Twilight Zone #3 (Hey, I like the tv show, and the painted cover is good) .12

Only two Julie Schwartz titles to buy this month, so I can pick up a couple of Gold Key faves:
Amazing Spider-Man #2 ($.12) Atom #6 ($.12) Fantastic Four #14 ($.12) Green Lantern #20 ($.12) Journey into Mystery #91 ($.12) Magnus, Robot Fighter $2 ($.12) Popeye #68 ($.12) Strange Tales #108 ($.12) Tales of Suspense #41 ($.12) Tales to Astonish #43 ($.12)
Cei-U! I summon the sweet haul!

Dunc and Loo #6 Ghost Stories #2 Green Lantern #20 Metal Men #1 Peanuts #1 Poe's the Raven (#1) Ponytail #2 Superman #160 Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen #68 Wonder Woman #137
I don't know that I would've necessarily picked up Ponytail as a kid, but I would now--that Lee Holley art is damn appealing (ditto Dunc and Loo). And much as I hate to say it, Action, Adventure, and Detective look a little too silly to pull the trigger on.

Candy nostalgia is the best, and really did go part and parcel with the newsstand comic book buying experience back in the day A funny story on Neccos...absolutely loved them as a kid (the "chocolate" flavored ones were my favorite)... My favorite flavor was--is--the dark grey "licorice" ones. Though I wouldn't say no to the chocolate ones either ! I include "is" above because I still see Necco Wafers sold here in Manhattan--and yes, I still pick them up now and again.

Oh, those licorice ones, and even the chocolate... to be avoided at all costs. But we could still have been friends, because I would have trade you mine for one strawberry licorice roll!

Okay, February 1963 -- DC, except when noted otherwise Action #299 Supergirl's on the cover, so I'll pick this up. 12 cents Adventure #307 The Legion's on the cover, so I'll buy this one too. 12 cents Adventures of the Fly #25 Looks interesting--Fly Girl's having trouble in court. An Archie comic. 12 cents Falling In Love #58 I love the cover layout and the hair's linework. Love John Romita's romance work. 12 cents Metal Men #1 Wow, what a cover! And it's a new superhero team, so this one's definitely for me. 12 cents Superboy #104 Lana Lang. 12 cents Lois Lane # 40 Lana Lang. And "Auntie Lois." 12 cents Strange Tales #108 The Fantastic Four are on the cover (I like this cover better than their own comic's cover this month.) Marvel 12 cents Twilight Zone #3 Such a beautiful painted cover! Gold Key 12 cents Wonder Woman #137 I like WW but can't stand those Wonder Tot/Wonder Girl stories. They're not on the cover here so I'll get this issue. 12 cents Hmm, looks like I've spent the entire $1.20--no Broadway Rolls for me this time! Really love these covers.

Farrar, that Lois Lane story, billed on the cover as "Lois Lane's Old Age," is actually cruelly, IYAM, titled, "Lois Lane, Hag." Though it was Weisinger, so I'm not surprised. But maybe in '63 it was considered too nasty not to retitle for the cover. It was reprinted in the issue below with the original title on the cover:

But maybe in '63 it was considered too nasty not to retitle for the cover. It was reprinted in the issue below with the original title on the cover: There are other instances on those old LL covers where the story's title is changed (undoubtedly by Weisinger) for the cover, probably to make it more saleable or catchy. Here on the cover Weisinger could see she doesn't look like a hag (she looks elderly but she doesn't look like an old witchy-looking person). I blame story writer Leo Dorfman for the "hag" designation! You know, I had that Lois Lane Giant and it remains one of my favorite comics from my childhood. I got it while on summer vacation with my family and I read it over and over again throughout that vacation. What's great about this particular issue is that most of the stories focused on Lois's career as an investigative reporter. And this "hag/old age" story was no exception; she was investigating a charlatan operation that purported to restore people's youth.

I was able to get 3 non-Big Two comics this month - 2 Gold Keys and one Archie. Fantastic Four #15 Journey into Mystery #92 Tales of Suspense #42 Action Comics #300 (Classic Superman story!) Justice League of America #19 Flash #136 Detective Comics #315 (I normally wouldn't pick this up, but it has a rhino on the cover, and the rhino is my favorite animal!!) Batman #155 (The dragon caught my eye. Okay, it's a bronze dragon statue, unfortunately, but hey, it's still got the Penguin.) Bonanza #3 Daffy Duck #33 Adventure #308 Edit: I realized that I forgot Adventure #308, and the Legion is an absolute MUST, so I had to drop Archie to make room for it. Sorry, Arch.
