Tough call without being able to browse the nterior pages of these comics! But after a quick glance at some of the credits, i'd go with: Fantastic Four #1 - no explanation necessary Amazing Adult Fantasy #7 - whattaya mean, not that kind of adult fantasy? oh well, it's all Ditko stories so I'll get it anyway; G.I. Combat #90 - includes a 13-page Russ Heath story Journey into Mystery #73 - Kirby, Ditko, and Don Heck stories MAD #66 - if this counts, not appearing on Mik's page; if it isn't eligible, I'll probably go with another Marvel anthology with Kirby, etc stories, or another war comic with Russ Heath art MAD's a quarter, so you're over budget.

So berkley is wanting to peruse the interiors before buying and spend more than his allowance? tsk-tsk... next thing ya know, he's gonna get us all thrown out of the corner drugstore for loitering and shoplifting!

I would have scrounged up a nickel or 5 pennies in order to get my hands on 4 10cents and 1 15cents issues.
DC Star Spangled War Stories # 99 10 cents because I gotta have a army team of circus performers fighting dinosaurs!
DC Blackhawk #165 10 cents cuz Vs the anti-Blachawk league? Wanna see that!
Marvel Gunsmoke Western #67 20 cents with Kid Colt my favorite comic book cowboy!
Marvel Kid Colt #101 10 cents with KC vs Jesse James, the Ypungers, the Daltons and Johnny Ringo to save Sam Hawk? Oh hee haw yes!
Dell Combat #1 with that awesome painted cover featuring the Bismarck is right up my alley.
I am choosing based on what would look and be exciting for young me. War, westerns and dinosaurs would rock my world like all get out at that time. Along with monsters, knights and science-fiction my other sweet spots. So there are quite a few others in this month I would save to buy up later if they could be found on the spinner rack.
Why not FF #1 you ask? Simple answer is I would know nothing about FF other than for a quick flip through. Cover is interesting and inside would spark my curiosity but it being an unknown it would be a secondary purchase. Me at that age was watching on television and at the movie theater with my grandfather: westerns and war! So already familiar and enjoyable, I would grab those comics up knowing I would like them!

Hmmm, that wouldn't work for me, as my folks would have said something along the lines of "well if you can come up with your own money, you don't need an allowance, and I would only have the 4 or 5 cents I scrounged up and no allowance moving forwards for a while. -M

Well, that was the problem back then, wasn't it (and still to a degree today)--it's not enough to put out a book readers might want to buy. When they have limited spending money, they've got to want to buy it instead of something else.

My thinking is that I'm choosing these based on what I'd want now. I wasn't alive in 1961, anyway. There's no wrong answer, though.

Me at that age was watching on television and at the movie theater with my grandfather: westerns and war! So already familiar and enjoyable, I would grab those comics up knowing I would like them! Without the lens of nostalgia and hindsight, the cover to FF#1 really just looks like another monster book, and I might say if monster books are your thing there are other options on the stands that month that actually look more interesting. Now, knowing what we do know, it's an obvious choice, but for a kid on the stands with only 50 cents to spend and all those other options and not knowing really what Marvel is or the FF is, I'm not sure a lot of folks would make that choice. There's a reason why Stan and Jack made a big change with issue #3 making it more obviously a super-hero book with colorful costumes on the cover to make it stand out from all the other options on the stands-a nd you don't fix what ain't broke, so I am not sure they make that change if a lot of people were already making the choice of FF amongst all those other option. -M

Limited finances has ALWAYS influenced my purchasing options. I really would spend what felt like hours flipping through issues making tough decisions. Certainly I know that I missed out on lots of fun and wonderful series or great issues, but what I chose to take home became very important and cherished all the more. Which of course directly influenced my choosing the 70"s as my formative and favorite decade.

How stupid of me - and also a reminder of why I didn't buy that as many issues of MAD as I would have liked, even at the height of my enjoyment of the mag in the early 70s. But I have my heart set on it now, so I'm keeping it, which means I'll have to revise my picks:
FF#1 Amazing Adult Fantasy #7 MAD #65 (or #66, whichever one was on the stands)
so I have 5 cents left over - did someone say hockey cards were 5 cents back then? I'd go for that. Otherwise, I'll have to try to save it for next month!

I had damn near every issue of Mad from 1972-78. But they were all bought at garage/yard sales.

Good choice; MAD was on fire in its early years, and one of the overall best books of the 60s and 70s.

With that thought, I would be coming up with ways of having MUCH MORE than 50 cents to spend on comics. Selling my school lunch rather than eating it. Tutoring the jocks for keeping their grades up to remain on school sports teams. Yard work for any and every neighbor I could convince. Donate plasma. Whatever it takes LOL There is so much to from mediocre to great that 50 cents just won't cut it. Like Pokemon, gotta have them all hehehe

That's why any time these hypothetical scenarios come up, I try to insert myself in time capsule mode, and base my choices on being a comic-book aged kid at the time. Otherwise, I feel like Biff Tannen betting on sports with an almanac from the future... and we know what happened with that.
