...umm. Anyway, do I approach this like I'm a normal kid in 1961, or like I'm a kid with my 2021 knowledge of comics and the collector's market? I'm going to assume I'm a kid in 1961 with no concern for key issues, favorite creators, nor the future of collectibles. That being the case, here are my picks for August: I'm definitely spending the lion's share on Famous Monsters of Filmland, so there's 35 cents right there. With only one 10 cent comic left to choose, I'd cringe at all the enticing covers I'd be passing up, but ultimately I would need a Batman book, and Detective Comics has the better cover for this month, so that's where I'd go. For September, I think I'd rather see Superman, Batman, and Robin in one book together than go for the individual titles, so World's Finest #121. And I've always loved the idea of the World's Fair, so Life with Archie #11 is an obvious choice. Speaking of which, Jughead AND monsters?? Sign me up for Jughead #78. Holy crap! I can't believe I don't own this one today! The Uncle Scrooge covers never wow me, but I do love those stories, so Uncle Scrooge #36. The final one is a tough choice. I think I'd be intrigued by the Fantastic Four by this point: two covers featuring two exciting sci-fi scenarios starring a plainclothed team. I think the aliens in the house on the cover of #2 would have absolutely caught my eye, but then how do you pass up a cover promising THE DEATH OF SUPERMAN? I'd have to finally go with Superman #149, and I doubt I would have regretted it. I'm approaching it like I'm me now, an adult, back in 1961 and I'm buying whatever I think looks the most interesting and will give me the most reading pleasure, as opposed to what will be the most valuable 60 years from now. I wasn't around in 1961 and if I pretended I'm a kid buying these, should I pretend I'm 6 year old? 12 years old? 16 years old? The choices would be different for each age, so I'm just going with what I want to read now. However, everyone seems to be taking a different approach, which is fine. This is pretty much how I’m doing it.

Thanks Dad. I'm gonna put on my Keds and grab my Huffy to ride down to the local Sav-On. I'm purchasing: - Tales to Astonish #26 - Fantastic Four #2 - Top Cat #1 And with baseball season wrapping up, it's football and basketball season. Last 20 cents will go towards some Fleer basketball cards. Wilt Chamberlin, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West rookies. Elgin Baylor, Bill Russell. Seriously, what kid just bought solely comics? I was a 70s/80s kid and I bought baseball cards and comics together all the time.

Pretty much all my income went to reading material off one sort or another.

Was never a card guy either. Spent on used books as nearly once a month my grandfather would take me along on his Saturday run to town hitting a half dozen or so used book stores. He was a big men's pulp and western novel reader. He always had a dozen (or more) brown grocery bags filled and overflowing of books. Each month he would load up a bag of read books which he did not want to save for reading again, then trade them in for credit and buy more.
Each time we went I was given a dollar to buy ONLY used books to read for myself. I was probably the only 6-8 year old who was reading Doc Savage, the Shadow, ERB, REH, Donald Westlake, Raymond Chandler along with Heinlen, the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Black Stallion, Louis La'Mour, Zane Grey and H.G. Wells.

I was way too old for Garbage Pail. I just never had a yen for cards of any kind. When it came to sports I was far more likely to buy magazines than cards.

That Bat-Girl story in Batman #144 is one of the Batman highlights of the era.

Hmm let's see...
JLA #8 (as a kid, I often bought team books to get more bang for my buck) Magic Agent #1 (just looks cool and I loved spy stuff as a kid) Our Army at War #113 (I loved tanks as a kid, for my army men and the most frequent model kit I got to build with my dad) Star Spangled War Stories #100 (army men and dinosaurs, ok sign me up)
and lastly, well I want that Lone Ranger book but it's 15 cents, and I only have 12 left, so
Flash #125

I was a dinosaur kid, so of course I will buy...
Star Spangled War Stories #99
Brave and the Bold #38
I was also an army man kid, so...
GI Combat 90
Our Army at War #111
and because I would have wanted to see lots of super-heroes, and because they looked so weird on that cover...
Justice League of America #7

Making my 60 cents go as far as possible this month... and since Charlton books are still a dime, I'm gonna stre---tch that allowance as far as possible!
Here's my choices:
I actually have three of these in my current collection-- Submarine Attack, Fightin' Air Force, and U.S. Air Force.

- Walt Disney's Uncle Donald and His Nephews Dude Ranch #52 - Richie Rich #8
Save that last 25 cents for next month or pick up a few more basketball cards or get a few treats.

No issue of Mad this month. That helps.
Jughead 79...Creature on the cover.
Magic Agent #1...ACG is still a dime. Worth a shot.
Honestly, I'd spend the rest on SF digests or used paperbacks. That may be one of the worst looking months for comics I've ever seen.
