None of the comics interest me. I'll buy 2 cheeseburgers and a fries from McDonald's instead.
Total cost =48 cents.

If not, there must have been a White Castle, like the one where we used to go back in the prehistoric years. That's how everybody knew our town: "Oh, yeah, where the White Castle is..." think when I was a kid, the burgers were eight cents. Of course, the pay toilets in the restaurant were a nickel, so eventually, they made a little money on you.

In New Yawk in 1961-62 you had both White Castle AND White Tower... they had been slugging it out in the burger wars east of the Mississippi since the early 1930's. RIP White Tower...
Upstate you also had Carrol's, which was loosely modeled on McDonald's. You also had Wetson's out on Long Island, and scattered here and there.
And of course, the ever-present HoJo... That's a chain I really miss. As a kid, I loved eating under that orange roof. Their ice cream was killer too.

The closest McDonalds until I was in high school was 50 miles away. I have zero nostalgia for McDonalds.

I have anti-nostalgia for MacDonalds: the first I heard of it was when we got cable in the late 70s or early 80s and I saw the commercials - up to then, I had seen lots of American tv shows but not the commercials. We also happened to get our first colour tv around the same time, so it's possible that was a contributing factor as well, but at any rate, the MacDonalds commercials looked totally bizarre and freaky to me, and not in a good way; not only the visual aspect but also how loud and frenzied it felt. I really hated everything about it, so when an actual MacDonald's outlet finally came to our town a few years later, I wasn't expecting much - but I would say the food was even worse than my lowest expectations.

Somehow I overlooked JLA. I will have to decide if I want to give up one of my 5 comics to get that instead.

Wow! Archie is really leaning into the monster craze this month! It would be a hard choice for me, and it would be easy for me to swap out one of the DCs for amother Archie with aliens on the cover. But, let's say...
Action Comics #283 Archie's Joke Book Magazine #59 Archie's Pal Jughead #79 Batman #144 Justice League of America #8
Looking from today, I'd probably go with...
Adventures of Little Archie #21 Around the Block with Dunc & Loo #2 Linda Lark Registered Nurse #2

With the jump to 12cents, watching pennies with my limited allowance (c'mon mom/dad, all the other kids are getting a buck!) My spending is ALL CHARLTON at 10cents each.
Space Adventures #43 Six Gun Heroes #66 Konga #4 Kid Montana #32 Space War #14
What boy wouldn't be thrilled with Cowboys, Spacemen and a giant Monkey/Ape?
Addendum: Forgot to say holding 10cents for my next spree since prices went up.

Detective Comics #298 has the first appearance of the second Clayface and it’s awesome ... but I already have one.
So my choices are
Adventure #291 - for the Bizarro World and also for Superboy’s romance with Cleopatra. What will Lana say?
Batman #144 - Bat-Girl hasn’t been around that long and she’s already meeting Bat-Mite! I hope it doesn’t go to her head.
The Brave and the Bold #39 - I’ve never read any of the original Suicide Squad stories.
Hot Stuff #43 - I’ve long been fascinated by Hot Stuff and the disturbing implications of the premise.
Unusual Tales #31 - Ditko cover. There might be some good stories inside.

No Marvels this month, weird... But I'm going to spend my 60 cents without buying any 12-cent comics. I'll get my Ditko fix with Konga #4, 10 cents. First issue of a new sci-fi feature, Space Man, in Four Color #1253, 15 cents. And one that Mike doesn't list for some reason - Help! volume 2, #1, 35 cents. The GCD says it went on sale on 30 October 1961 ( www.comics.org/issue/978453/ ). Edited by Harvey Kurtzman with a "contributing editor" named Gloria Steinem. She doesn't have very many credits in comics; I wonder what became of her. This issue contains an Archie parody; Archie Comics sued to take the copyright away and then neglected to renew it so the story is now public domain.

All this talk of Batman 144 made me want to read the story where Bat-Mite meets Bat-Girl again. It’s hilarious. I’ve been reading it every two or three months since I got the Batman in the Sixties reprint collection.
