In the most excellent "Spend your allowance" game thread, we sometimes chat about the candy treats that would accompany our monthly comic book purchases back in the day. Some recent mentions were Broadway strawberry licorice rolls, Neccos, and Charleston Chews. What other ones were favorites back in the day, and are they lost to time at this point? Can be candy, baked goods, soda, etc. One of my absolute favorites back in the late 70's when I was a kid was Royals, a mint flavored candy made by M&M's. These had something a little extra special going on that I don't think the current "mint M&M's" have. Many a comic book reading session was accompanied by a bag of these!

Not quite extinct, but very hard to find, I loved me some Zots when I was a kid. Nothing quite like that sour fizz in your mouth when you hit the center.

I can't think of anything I miss, but we had some bizarre candy when I was a kid. Those little wax bottles with a little bit of "juice" in them. Dots of candy stuck to paper (you usually got to enjoy a bit of paper with your sweet). Candy necklaces and bracelets. Candy bullets (!) And of course candy cigarettes.

Do they still make Popeye cigarettes?

...although they apparently have different packaging now. This is how I remember getting them:
I also liked Runts, which were sold via vending machines:
Although I'm pretty sure they only cost a quarter when I used to buy them.

A girl I liked once told me she liked Nerds... I said "Oh, good!"

I hadn't seen them for ages, but when driving to remote places with a friend on pinball restoration jobs years ago, I was delighted to find rolls of them at trucker-serving gas stations with good-sized snack aisles. Once in a while, I'll see them locally also and always buy several. My only complaint--at some point lemon-lime was dropped for cherry (which I like, but they should have dropped grape instead).

Here in the UK, we had Pyramint: I think it was discontinued in about 1992/93 after 4-5 years.

Do they still make Popeye cigarettes? I had to look this one up as well...I remember in the 80's seeing this exact type of candy in New England where I lived but not with the Popeye branding. It looks like they are still available at least up in your neck of the woods! candyfunhouse.ca/products/popeye-candy-sticks

The downfall of the UK can be attributed to 3 things: the reign of Henry VIII, the break-up of Oasis, and the discontinuation of Pyramint. Once all of those 3 things had occurred, the cosmos itself shook. The UK has been in decline since.

Speaking of candy as a gateway to tobacco products... I was fan of Big League Chew.

I'm so grateful that classic Bazooka Joe is back. I buy a huge tub of it about once a year. My only regret is that, while I like that they are making new comics for it, the send-away prizes are gone!

Candy cigarettes were the first thing I thought of... Fruit Stripe gum is still around, but, it was more popular, when I was a kid. Beeman's was another, until the late 70s, but has been revived as a nostalgia candy. Brachs used to have some great one, but they discontinued or monkeyed with most of the candies, until they have little resemblance to the originals. The Royals have a betetr flavor and consistency than they often did in the old days; but, I don't think they make their sour balls, any longer. Of course, we all know that Pop Rocks were taken off the market after Mikey, from the Life cereal ads, died when he mixed them with Coca-Cola! I heard it on the playground; so, it must be true! Fonzie also died and they replaced him with another actor, after giving him plastic surgery!
