I live in the outer suburbs of a small/mid (163,000) city. When I move here in 1992, it was a just decent-sized college town of 48,000. Now, 30 years later, it's just ridiculous. Murfreesboro is now the largest bedroom city for the Nashville/Davidson County metro area-- we're a little more than 30 miles away from downtown Nashville, in Rutherford County.
Even so, I can be in the country inside of 10 minutes. Looking forward to the day that I can move another 20 miles out into the country... that's where I belong anyway.

In the suburbs just west of Beaverton, Oregon. Didn't we do this once, with a map? I was right , we did do it before, with a map - here. The map link seems to be dead, though.

I live in the suburbs of Chicago. When I tell people this, they tend to ignore the "suburbs" part and think I'm a city kid, which is in no way true. I don't go to the city unless it's necessary. Some of the burbs are more city-like than others, but I've always lived in the Brady Bunch types of suburbs.

I live in the suburbs of Chicago. The company I work for is based in Hoffman Estates, which I understand is known locally as Hoffman's Mistake. They used to have us travel to corporate HQ once in a while but not for the last few years. If they ever send me there again, I'll get in touch.

Hoffman was the last place I lived before where I am now (and plan to stay forever). I'm more south now, but from here to the Hoffman Estates area isn't a bad drive for me. It's about the midpoint of my daily commute before we switched to work-from-home (but the commute as a whole was soul-crushing on a daily basis).

I live in Huntsville Alabama, a mid-size modern city, in a typical American residential neighborhood of one-family houses with yards, trees, sidewalks, streetlights, and close access to shopping, doctors, and parks, with themed street names. I'm half a mile from the oldest cemetery in Huntsville. Two blocks down my street the ground rises into the Appalachian foothills, making for a fine backdrop to the east. I've got no interest in the country life (which most of the people around here seem to long for) or the urban beehive. This is the kind of place I grew up back in Memphis, Tennessee, and it's comfortable living for me.

Sounds a bit like my idea of a Ray Bradbury American town. Does the Coogan and Dark Carnival ever come to your area?

I'm in downtown Ottawa, not at all the kind of place I grew up in, which was a small city (officially a city, which was a point of some pride) of around 20 to 30,000 people (fluctuating with the fortunes of the pulp and paper mill). I still get back there once or twice a year and often think of going back for good, especially since the Covid pandemic. But I like it here, too - especially the small movie theatre within 10 minutes' walk, where they show a lot of independent and foreign films.

It's somehow just the right size for a city! And it's got dinosaurs as well as the last piece of Avro F-105 on the planet. Montreal can't compete with that!
