I'm in downtown Ottawa, not at all the kind of place I grew up in, which was a small city (officially a city, which was a point of some pride) of around 20 to 30,000 people (fluctuating with the fortunes of the pulp and paper mill). I still get back there once or twice a year and often think of going back for good, especially since the Covid pandemic. But I like it here, too - especially the small movie theatre within 10 minutes' walk, where they show a lot of independent and foreign films. Ottawa is one of our favourite places to visit. It's somehow just the right size for a city! And it's got dinosaurs as well as the last piece of Avro F-105 on the planet. Montreal can't compete with that!
Next time you're in Ottawa let me know, maybe we can get out for a few drinks if you have time.

I live in a small town in a subrural area just east of Pittsburgh, PA. Officially, we have just over 3000 residents as of the 2020 census, but we're surrounded by a township that has about 20K residents living in it, making our school district a medium-sized one for the area.

I live in a small town in Buckinghamshire, England, amongst the Chiltern Hills and just to the North West of London. An hour's car drive (traffic willing) or tube journey East will put me smack in the middle of central London and an hour West will find me in Oxford. Our town is in a semi-rural location; with just a 10 minute walk I can be out in rolling countryside and there are a number of farms just outside of the town. It's actually a beautiful part of the world and I'm pretty lucky to live where I do. Was scrolling through this thread and saw your post. I knew you lived in the UK but didn't know exactly where. If you would, hit me up with a PM with any places/things that I NEED to see in Oxford, or if you have any restaurant/pub recommendations. I'm going to be in your neck of the world next month and we are planning on heading up to Oxford one day (I'm hoping to get tickets for the football match between Swansea City and Oxford United on Tuesday the 9th, but if not, we're still going to go up there and check the city out).

I live in Canberra, the capital city of Australia. It's hard to describe to anyone who hasn't been. It is a planned city, with a lot of green spaces and corridors of bushland, making it only major city in Australia where you can actually see kangaroos jumping down the the streets (more commonly in the suburbs than the city centre). It has most of the facilities of a big city, but the general feel of a big country town.

And the Brumbies in Super Rugby, or whatever they're calling that competition these days.

I live in San Dimas, California, about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
Many people will recognize the name of San Dimas because it’s partly where Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure took place. But it’s much more interesting than that! The city has a statue of trapper Jedediah Smith, the first American to walk to California from the United States. This was in the 1820s, when California was still Mexico. Smith is said to have walked through this area, with a group of other trappers, on his way to the San Gabriel Mission. This route is part of what eventually became the Old Spanish Trail, which was used by thousands of pioneers to get to California after passing through Santa Fe on the way from the Eastern states. (I’ve heard that the I-10 roughly follows the route of the old Spanish Trail, if you want to check it out on a map.)
I read a biography of Jedediah Smith last year. I hadn’t known much about him up to that point. I didn’t realize that much of Jebediah Springfield’s story is based on the experiences of Jedediah Smith and some of his associates in the fur trade.

Wow! That was something I did not expect anyone outside Australia to know.

My friend Giallo Danny really likes Australian films and he was telling me that Long Weekend is really good. I’ll probably watch it in the next few weeks.

I'm a big rugby fan and have been watching Super Rugby (wish they hadn't called it that, though, to be honest) since it started in the mid-1990s. I'm pretty sure there are a few more here - Commond, for one - who would know about the Brumbies and the other clubs

The original 1978 film is a fantastic psychological horror film. I haven't seen the 20008 remake so I can't comment on it (although the cast is certainly good).

At a charity auction at a convention I attended several years ago (certainly pre-covid) I bought an item that was a box set of the original three Mad Max movies and having it signed by Steve Bisley (Goose) and Hugh Keays-Byrne (Toecutter, and later Immortan Joe in Fury Road) who were guests at the con. $75 well spent in my opinion.

I don't follow sports at all (and find my country's obsession sport to be both frustrating a depressing) so I'm always surprised when others on this board do, as subconsciously I believe all comics fans must be like me.
Too many bad memories of being mocked for being bad at sport, I guess, usually by people who regarded reading as proof of homosexuality.

Giallo Danny has a book, the 100 Best Australian films, or something like that. He’s been working on seeing them all for years. A lot of them are hard to find in the US.
Whenever I see an Australian film, I mention it to him and he’ll tell me if he’s seen it or not, and what he thought of it.
I saw Turkey Shoot a few years ago. Danny hasn’t seen it. It’s not on his list. Sometimes I tease him about his hoity toity list, snubbing Turkey Shoot like that. (I’m just kidding him. I’m no expert on Australian film. I wouldn’t know about Turkey Shoot if I hadn’t seen Not Quite Hollywood.)
Long Weekend isn’t on the list either. He came across it on a streaming service by chance and gave it a go.
