Well Flash #123 (i.e. the Flash of 2 Worlds) was cover dated September 1961 as well, predating you're book, so fans knew the Silver Age was in full affect, unless you were a Marvel Zombie and ignore the DC stuff...Wildfire you oblivious neanderthal (done in his best Dan Akroyd, SNL Weekend report cyber-voice) so your first excuse is null and void....so we will go with #2 -M At least I was right with Dick Giordano. That you were, you have a good eye, I've noticed.

In light of MRP's protest, I decided to go ahead and hit Paint.... Patriotic! (identity changed to protect the innocent) It's staggering how many characters carry that Mauser pistol. Not having any luck with the obvious choices yet.
ETA: The more I look at it, it's probably not a pistol after all.

That flag looks a bit like Frank Miller drew it.

I suspect this will be a tricky one... it seems as though no one recognized it right off.

Nope, I also thought it was Miller.

48-star flag. So the story at least is set pre-1960, if that helps anyone.

You assume the artist is being accurate here, that's like assuming that a chess board will be drawn as having 64 squares. It should, but it usually doesn't. Let's hear it from wildfire first ;-)

I haven't read the comic, so I'm not sure when the story takes place...it would have to be a weird time travel-y thing for that to be the case, though. It was certainly NOT printed pre-1960.

I'm thinking Nightwing (vol. 1) #40.

I'm thinking Nightwing (vol. 1) #40. Good catch. And it does indeed appear to be a time travel story, what with Tarantula and Nazis on the cover.

Not a time-travel story. BTW, there's a couple of empty chessboards there, and sure enough, they aren't 64 squares ones.

It was (then) modern day John Law in a publisher's waiting room, relating a recent, slightly pumped up anecdote about Nightwing 'helping him' with some 80-something super-Nazis from his past, all to impress the attractive older secretary. EDIT: Oh, and I think it was Scott McDaniel's final issue.

BTW, there's a couple of empty chessboards there, and sure enough, they aren't 64 squares ones. Your point is well-taken . Though in this case, the 48-star flag does seem to be a deliberate choice. And Tarantula does seem to be sporting a Mauser, the weapon of choice for a great many characters, including Manhunter, The Rocketeer, Jon Sable, Baron Zemo, etc., making this a particularly difficult challenge.

Oh, and I think it was Scott McDaniel's final issue. That it is, and the last Nightwing in my collection.
