I know what happens in Death in the Family and I’ve seen the most important panels in one form or another over the years, but I don’t think I’ve ever actually read all four issues from start to finish. I’ll see if the library has it. Don't! Really. It's a bad story for the most part. The chapter leading up to Jason's death and the chapter after are both amazing, but the rest is dreck. I read #426 just now. I assumed you were exaggerating. My bad.

I just read #428.
Wow. It really is just simply terrible.

I just read #428. Wow. It really is just simply terrible. Honestly, I always felt the art was sub-par as well... I am usually a sucker for Aparo's artwork, but I felt he sort of phoned this story in. Maybe he agreed the story was crap. At least that's my memory of the art.

I just read #428. Wow. It really is just simply terrible. I really enjoyed the second half of #427 and the first half of #428, but to each their own. #429 is far far worse. As for Aparo's art, yeah -- it's off. I swear the Joker's chin keeps getting longer each page.

It has so many off-the-wall, out-of-character moments that, juxtaposed with the Aparo art, it almost comes off as a Bob Haney story, just taken way too seriously and spread out to 100 wearisome pages.
The Joker as Iran’s U.N. Ambassador? That sounds like a Bob Haney subplot that’s resolved in about two pages.

The Joker as Iran’s U.N. Ambassador? That sounds like a Bob Haney subplot that’s resolved in about two pages. Starlin's Batman run is heavy with xenophobia. Every other government is working against us, and every diplomat is a monster who abuses their immunity. Joker as a U.N. ambassador fits that pattern entirely too well. Starlin never should have been a Batman writer. He didn't seem to have any respect for the tropes of the franchise, instead looking to make everything overly real-world and gritty to the point that none of it seemed realistic at all.

I was pretty busy today and haven’t had a chance to read #429. I guess I’ll do it now before I go to bed. I’d rather have it out of the way before I leave for Washington state tomorrow.

Shaxper I inherited a newspaper clipping in the issue that’s the death of Jason Todd. I’ll snap picture and post it later on today. Oh dear. You may have just added to my obsession. It never even occurred to me to collect newspapers that covered the event! Apparently Pear Jam. Which is her type of music and definitely not mine.

Well, Batman #429 was a comic book. I’ll say that for it.

Finally added the newsstand variants tonight. I had the variants for all but #426, and so I found this sweet #426 signed by Mignola, but it shipped from Canada (thus the delay). Well it's here now. Check it out!

Well I think my purchasing activity may have single-handedly driven up the prices of foreign variants for these issues. For months now, I haven't been able to find any for a decent price. Check out the astronomical amounts sellers are asking. And none of these have actually sold. They've been sitting at these prices for months now. Too bad, as I'd really like that Finnish one, as well as the Puerto Rican set.

I have a friend whose been picking them up the past few years, and hear people at shows asking dealers if they have any.
