Thanks! I'm sticking with vintage editions close to the time of publication for now but may branch out into modern editions later down the road.

Well I think my purchasing activity may have single-handedly driven up the prices of foreign variants for these issues. For months now, I haven't been able to find any for a decent price. Check out the astronomical amounts sellers are asking. And none of these have actually sold. They've been sitting at these prices for months now. Too bad, as I'd really like that Finnish one, as well as the Puerto Rican set. I think foreign versions have picked up as a new, previously inexpensive, niche. I have a friend whose been picking them up the past few years, and hear people at shows asking dealers if they have any. At least it's nice to know I was doing something before it was cool!

Comics fans and D&D players of a certain age should have no shortage of that feeling... -M

Spain, 1989 While the cover variations may not be as fun as some of the others we've seen, this is possibly the most interesting foreign variant I've yet come across. While the others were stand-alones or part of short runs designed to bring American comics to markets that generally weren't familiar with them, this one was clearly published as part of a larger American comic book scene. On the first page, it indicates the issue of the American series to which each of these issues corresponds for the diehard fans that want to know, and each has a DC News page, along with a list of the month's releases (twenty books on average!). Superman aside, the longest running books listed are in their twenties, and while many of these were either current or close to current, we do have Superman vs. The Amazing Spiderman (1976) and Legends of the Dark Knight #1 (1989), being published in the same months as Batman #426-429 (1988). Interestingly enough, there is a regular Batman series that is up to issue #28 (the new issue features Fever, which means it's reprinting Detective Comics #584 from March 1988), but Death in The Family was first printed at the end of 1988, so I guess they are publishing A Death in the Family out of order as its own limited series. Does that mean they won't be reprinting any of the remaining seven months worth of Jason stories that follow? Maybe they'll only reprint the Wagner/Grant/Breyfogle Detective Comics stories, in which Jason is almost always absent. Since this was printed in only three parts, the cover to Batman #429 appears inside of the third issue, in front of the portion that would have appeared in #429. Because #426 and #427 were 44 pages as opposed to 22 in their American iterations, these three volumes are able to maintain the original pacing of the first two issues while combining the last two into one. Finally, I should mention that these books faithfully reprint the ad page with the two 1-900 phone numbers to call, not that any of those votes would have helped in 1989!

IIRC, the original idea was that Jason would either be dead or in a coma, so that issue would have been largely the same either way.

Ok, remember me, wasn't a Superboy-prime punch which revived him? Google-FU! (searching searching)

IIRC, the original idea was that Jason would either be dead or in a coma, so that issue would have been largely the same either way. And, more importantly, Batman made the decision to go solo from that point forward, even if Jason woke up. Ironically, had Jason lived and that ending made it to print, it would have been harder to bring in future Robins. How do you say yes to Tim Drake when Jason Todd is sitting on the sideline?

Ok, remember me, wasn't a Superboy-prime punch which revived him? Yes, but (somehow) as an adult years later. Thus he became the Red Hood.

From what I've read, those few penciled pages are all that was different. Pretty much, the issue was going to be exactly the same except that Batman actually made it in time. It'll be interesting to see what it turns out to be besides Batman saving the day and of course a new Mignola cover is a win for me.

Brazil, 2021 I'm violating my self-imposed rule about including editions that weren't published in the same era as the original story (1988-1994 or so) because I just found these volume so compelling. Apparently, Panini Brazil has been reprinting all (or nearly all) Post-Crisis Batman stories in one handsome set entitled "Saga Do Batman". These particular entries includes Batman #426-431, Detective Comics #590-593, and Detective Comics Annual #1. I am seriously considering acquiring the entire set, even though I won't be able to read it!
