Last Friday I went into a store that has been around for a while as a game store but just recently added "& Comics" to their name. I discovered that they've been selling comics for years, and I should have stopped in long ago. Along with current releases they have some boxes of back issues, so for $2 each I picked up: Western Action #1, cover date 2/75 One of the few Atlas/Seaboard comics that I didn't have. I'm not sure that I've ever seen a copy before. This was part of the first wave of Atlas titles, and it was one of the few that never got a second issue. Larry Lieber is all over this book; he edited it, he drew the cover, with Frank Giacoia inks and Gaspar Saladino letters and logo, and he wrote the lead feature, "Kid Cody, Gunfighter", with Doug Wildey providing full art and lettering. The backup feature, "The Comanche Kid" (also identified on the cover as "The Renegade" but that name is not used inside) was scripted by Steve Skeates, pencilled by Jack Abel, inked by a young newcomer, Al Milgrom, and lettered by another young newcomer, Alan Kupperberg. I don't think I've ever seen Abel's pencilling before. All in all, the issue is more of a historical curiosity than a great work of art. Godzilla #20, cover date 3/79 I have most of the first 13 issues so I'm going to try to complete the series. This one has a cover by Herb Trimpe & Bob McLeod and a story by Doug Moench, Herb Trimpe and Dan Green, and was edited by old pro Allen Milgrom (they grow up so fast). In this one, the big G is only about 15 feet tall, and is still being pursued by a SHIELD team led by Dum Dum Dugan when the Fantastic Four intervene and make a mess of the situation. This may be one of the first times that Trimpe drew the FF.

You can never go wrong with Herb Trimpe/Doug Moench Godzilla! Being the old fart that I am I bought all of them off the rack new! And double dipped with sprinkles when Marvel released in Essential b/w format. Moench had the right idea's with plenty of human element mixed in with superb Kaiju giant monster death matches. Toss in cowboys, a child piloted Giant robot, a biggest big-foot ever, a night in Vegas, a monster making evil scientist (is Dr. Demonicus just the coolest evil scientific name or what?) a time travel trip to meet Devil Dinosaur, our boy "Zilla shrunken in a sewer rat fight, S.H.I.E.L.D, the Champions, FF and Avengers on the road trip across America and you have instant hours of zany pleasure! If only Marvel had been willing to pay for more than 2 years of publishing rights.

As someone who never bought that Godzilla series... isn't he kind of smallish on that cover? That seems very wrong to me. Also: did they ever have a Godzilla cross-over with the Shogun Warriors comic (which I also didn't buy)? I picked up on Micronauts and Rom instead of these two, no idea why not.
It's a bit strange that they had the Fantastic Four cross-over with Godzilla, Shogun Warriors, Micronauts and Machine Man.

I remember reading a few issues and in one of them, SHIELD reduced him in size using particles of some sort in an effort to capture him.
Not just any particles. PYM particles ("Zilla was in the MU of course) which kept on shrinking Godzilla to the point where he went sub-microscopic slipping between dimensional walls that allowed his time travel adventure with Devil Dinosaur. Of course nothing keeps the BIG G down for long and he reverted to his original size and returned to "current" time. No crossover with Shogun Warriors though since they were 2 different company owners.

I'd love to get the whole run of Godzilla! As it is, I only have two issues.

Found a new (to me) online dealer who was offering some temptingly discounted books. I wound up buying two. Here's Star Spangled War Stories 138 in about 7.0. This one has been entered in several of our cover contests and at just $32, I couldn't resist. Tales of Suspense 57 was offered at about 25 - 30% off. Not a book I was expecting to buy, but a key, Silver-age Marvel at a discount is irresistible.

That header in that slab doesn't look like the regular CGC ones. Is it from a different comic grading company? Also, will you be liberating it or is it destined to remained slabbed?

It's graded by CBCS. My understanding (which may be flawed) is that one of the founders of CGC formed the company to compete on the grading market. They claim their standards are a bit tighter than CGC's. I've had 2 dozen books graded by them and have had no complaints or disagreements. YMMV. I think I'll leave it slabbed for now. I have Essential Iron Man Vol. 1 if I care to revisit the story (a great one!).

Picked these up in the NYCCC I think I'm right in saying that the 1st Issue Special has a character whitewashed for the cover. The kid with the hat is definitely black on the inside pages.

CBCS does a better job grading books than CGC of which it is more universally acceptable form of grading conditions of Comic Books. My LCS and friend Jeff who retired from the Comic Book business rather sell books from CBCS than CGC. CBCS is a grading company that I feel it's has a higher standard than CGC. I'm might be in the minority here and I don't like to debate it but I feel that CBCS is an excellent comic book grading source and I rather own a book that was graded by CBCS than CGC. Confessor ... Leave that book alone and don't open it.

Confessor ... Leave that book alone and don't open it. Taken out of context, that might be the worst advice I've ever been given.
