These books were all in the dollar boxes, BUT-- the post holiday sale at my LCS included dollar bins-- at "buy-1-get-3-free".
So effectively, all these books were a 25 cents apiece. Essentially, I paid the princely sum of $12 for this batch of 48 books.
I basically filled up a short box, so this is part 1 of 2 of the bargain bin books... lots of "reader copies", but many in surprisingly nice condition. Part 2 will be posted in a separate post, but probably not until I get back from my travels this coming week.
That Tales of Evil Atlas book is a surprise. I never knew it existed. Good haul on the Army books , I see some classic covers among the bunch.

That 80 years of Detective Comics volume is pretty awesome! I have it right here! I read the first Riddler story once a month or so. The Long Halloween ... not so much. I’ve never understood why it’s so highly regarded. And what did they do to Calendar Man? Thats Long halloween book might have been a mistake. It's in Black and White. Yuk. Found this review of Long Halloween Noir. www.goodreads.com/review/show/2482727053It had me laughing out loud.

I'm always kicking myself for not picking up a copy of that Heroes Inc in the 80s/90s--there was a warehouse find of them and a dealer who was at Ithacon every year (and other local shows) had a stack of them for $4 or $5 each. I always figured "next time..."

Yeah, I see them all the time at shows, usually for less than $5. Issue #2, on the other hand, is much harder to find and goes for more.

That review is kinda funny, but I don't think that The Long Halloween is really as bad as all that. It is overlong and most of the "rogues gallery" appearances feel rather shoehorned in and could've been cut, but at its heart it's a fairly solid Batman vs the mob drama. I do think it is generally overrated in comic fan circles though. I've lots of much better Batman stories.

Serial numbers on nails? Whatever, Loeb. The Long Halloween is not good. I don’t dislike it as much as this reviewer but he is right about every point. The Long Halloween is sillier than anything in the Schiff era, by a long shot.

Most of the OOAW books clock in around 3-4.0 in condition, but they're all complete... perfect for readable placeholders in a collection!
That's pretty much where the vast majority of my OOAW issues fall. A few outliers in either direction, but most in that low-end midgrade. -M Don't you guys mean OAAW? I almost hurt myself trying to jam Our Army At War into OOAW.

Serial numbers on nails? Whatever, Loeb. The Long Halloween is not good. I saw the reviewer and other commentators saying about the nails thing, but wasn't that just a bluff? Like, Batman knows that nails don't have serial numbers, but he's hoping the con he's trying to get to talk will believe that they do and that the police have got him bang to rights, and that he'll squeal as a result. I might be misremembering, I have a feeling that Batman is just bulls***ing here.

So instead of catching the killer through detective work, here Batman chooses to browbeat the suspect to get him to confess. Like any lazy, corrupt GCPD policeman. Your interpretation may be correct, but I don’t think it’s likely to improve my opinion of Loeb as a writer. He’s not good.

Well, the guy he's browbeating is a small time minnow that he's intimidating to get information to land the big fish mob boss. I don't really see that characterisation as off base for the post-Crisis, grim and gritty Batman. I mean, The Long Halloween is set soon after Miller's Year One and I can't say I noticed all that much difference in Batman's characterisation between the two stories. I think this is maybe just part and parcel of "modern" grim and gritty Batman, no?
