I ended up selling the Mad #2, as I expected, and bought this with the money for an almost even swap. The upside of getting a low grade book is that there's less chance to make the book lower in grade by cracking a slab open. Nice choice. I don't even want to know how much you paid. though...

Is Archie really that funny though? As a Brit, I kinda like the exotic Americanness of Archie comics (they were never really a thing over here), but I've never read one that actually made me chuckle. MAD, on the other hand...

MAD, on the other hand... Archie is kind of like comfort food for me. Is a grilled cheese sandwich really THAT good? Not really, but it's comforting. Are McDonald's hamburgers that good? Absolutely not, but when I eat one, it's EXACTLY what I expected, and satisfying in that regard. However, I was just reading through a collection of Archie, and I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions. In particularly the stories from the 40's and 50's. They have a sort of whimsey that reminds me of movies from the 40's... a good example being the parts of It's a Wonderful Life where George is remembering how he met his wife at the High School Reunion.

Archie comics + digests + Hardcovers = approx 1500 in my stash. My silver-age collection has expanded quite nicely
Many of the women I know like to curl up with an Archie digest for a fun read.....

This is the 2nd part of my post-holiday 25-cent haul ( part 1 posted here). I do have enough for a 3rd part, but most of it is modern-era space-fillers, so I won't bother.
Anyway, all books pictured were dollar-box books on sale for "buy-1-get-3-free" (4 books for a dollar)-- the grand total for all of these books was $9.00 USD.
And someone must have gotten rid of their entire Phantom collection... their loss is my gain-- Gold Keys, Charltons, and a couple of foreign editions.

tartanphantom Great haul. Very jealous of the Phantoms. Those early painted covers are usually impossible to find at decent prices these days let alone in dollar bins (and dollar bins for sale to boot). -M

Popped into a used bookstore near home today and scored three TPBs: volumes 9 and 10 of Fables, which I needed, and the comic adaptation of Tolkien's The Hobbit, which I've wanted to read for a long time. Got all three for a total of £15.

Ok these were another trade, part of Crimebuster's Great Dollar Bin Challenge (my second time dipping in to this). I sent Scott the two 35 cent variant covers for Amethyst (#1 and #2) that were only sold in two markets as test variants on the newsstands back in the early 80s. I picked those up out of a dollar bin back when I was still in CT and starting to collects Amethyst and have had them ever since. I am not a big variant collector, so when these reached a point where they were going for more than I wanted them, I decided it was time to let them go and get the regular cover price editions instead, and when CB started this challenge up, I figured this would be as good a place as any to put them out there for someone who wanted them in return for some stuff I wanted. And this is what I got back from CB... There were two big books that I wanted that he had listed... and the rest was a matter of balancing things off. CB included a regular cover price Amethyst 1 to help me get that taken care of (I still need to find a 2 next time I am out looking for comics) and a couple of late issues of the 90s GR series that are hard to find and can get pricey... leaving me only 4 or 5 issues needed to complete that run. I love this Mignola cover, but a few years ago I had traded away the copy I had bought off the stands, so got this one back via this trade and the last book is one I wasn't interested in for myself, but one of my other frequent trading partners The one I got all the Scooby issues from recently) has a number of Punisher collectors among his customers and had asked if I had any Punisher stuff for trade, so I took this one to send on to him and get some other stuff I was interested in back in return... But I look forward to seeing what CB Crimebuster gets in return for those Amethysts and I hope they find a home with a collector who will appreciate them. I had them for nearly 20 years, time for someone else to get a chance to have them now. -M

I made my monthly pilgrimage to the LCS to pick up my pulls and look for supplies (I did manage to find a single 100 pack of SA boards-they got a case in last week and this was the last one). I stopped by Dark Star as well, but they hadn't gotten their supply shipment in. Instead a rooted around their dollar boxes and picked up a few back issues, my first purchase of back issues of the year... I found 1 issue of Sgt. Rock I needed (DC books were the sale books for Feb) and Eisner's adaptation of Don Quixote (which was in the box of $1 trades and GN). also in the $1 boxes were these... and these... I looked around at the rest of the back issue stock, but the only other thing I pulled the trigger on were some Uncle Scrooge back issues from the Gladstone and Disney Comics period... Nothing major, but making progress on Rock and Scrooge. -M

I also won my first auction of the year at Lone Star last night. It was for Drag Cartoons #7, one of the issues featuring an Alex Toth story... to round out the order to make shipping more palatable, I added two things off of my want list-they had two of the Dragonlance Saga volumes co-produced by DC and TSR in stock (of the 5) and fantasy titles were on sale this week so I pulled the trigger on them... now back to trading only for a while, as I spent my small back issue budget for Jan/Feb. -M

From last weekend's trip to the LCS. Spent a little time going through the boxes of unsorted Magic cards first, pulling out about $75 of cards that I paid just slightly over $7 for, then moved onto the $1 comic boxes. Not a huge haul, but I'm happy with it. Random DC books that I gladly paid $1 for (bought the JLI issue since I already have the Suicide Squad half of the story) A few Bronze Age issues of Kull. Have managed to pick up a good portion of the series on the cheap (paid $2 for one issue, then $1 for the other 13 I own):

Okay, it's arrived. The big grail book I've been chasing for awhile! After downgrading my Avengers #8, I used the money to buy this book, which is one of the biggest for me, and not an easy one to track down. here it is! This is the final purchase of a batch of purchases that I've been doing since I started restructuring my collection a few months ago. I haven't shared them all, but here's the whole set in its glory! All seven DC Romance #1 issues, plus the first DC issue of the three titles they acquired from other publishers.

I'd take that in a 2.0 all day, every day. Even finding any copy is a major coup. They're out there, but they don't surface very often.
And @mrp is gonna have a fit because it's a "red dress" cover...
