Went to Jersey and picked up some dollar books. The Enemy Ace cover drew me in. I needed those Action comics and I have the complete Jim Balent run of Catwoman so I took a chance on the GA book based on the Balent cover.

How long was Action Comics a weekly? I've got none of them, my last classic issue is #544, the 45th Anniversary issue which features the 'new' Luthor and Brainiac. Then there's a very long lull until the New 52.

Icctrombone Nice pick ups, especially that Planet of Vampires #1, I haven't seen one of those priced under $25 in a while, since the Atlas media deal was announced. I haven't seen them sell at that price, but I haven't found a dealer in about 3 years that who has had one for less than that. I was trying to grab all the Atlas/Seaboard stuff but I gave up after the media deal was announced because the prices got jacked even though they weren't moving at dollar bin prices. -M

That's all they're worth. All the books I get at that store are in the range of good/good+, nothing high grade.

The Action Weekly run wasn't too bad, I enjoyed the rotating serial format (similar to Marvel Comics Presents around the same time frame). I probably enjoyed the Superman, Blackhawk, Phantom Stranger and Phantom Lady storylines the best. The (Hal Jordan) Green Lantern stories bored me as usual, and I never was much of a Nightwing fan, so those stories didn't really grab me either. The others (Secret Six, Black Canary, Wild Dog, etc) were interesting at times, and as much as I like Deadman, I think his stories in the title dragged on way too long.

Got this in the mail today. My record keeping has been poor lately but I think that makes it 6 books left to finish the 75 issue run.

I recently picked up the Fantastic Four Omnibus Vol. 4. It's great to read the final leg of the Lee/Kirby run and to see how the title transitioned after Kirby. But who on earth gave the green light to this revised spine design??

Design--esp book design--has always been a weakness at Marvel

It's so they can get completists and OCD collectors who care about trade dress to rebuy volumes 1-3 with the new design so they either have them all and they all match. It's simply the way the direct market exploits the personality quirks of collectors to survive since there is not a large enough customer base for it to really be viable. If you have a small customer base, you need to get them to buy everything or rebuy the same material over and over. -M

I don't consider myself OCD but I do have 4 different versions of the first 100 issues of the Avengers.

I wonder what kind of market research would lead them to such a conclusion.

I wonder what kind of market research would lead them to such a conclusion. I spotted the change in spine design too when I picked up vol 4 a few months back, but actually this is the second time they've changed it: the first printing of vol 1 did not look like vols 2 and 3. You obviously have a later printing of vol 1 there. So my four first print volumes look even less uniform than yours do. I don't much care about that kind of stuff though, but I know it really annoys some.
