Purchased something that's been on my wants list for years and years today... I've owned the follow-up Land of Oz treasury for almost a decade, but this first volume has proven elusive in decent condition and at a price that I could justify. I found this on eBay for £30, which, given what nice shape it's in, I thought was a great price. Can't wait to receive it and give it a read.

Bought on the 8th, shipped on the 11th, received on the 15th via Royal Mail 2nd Class (to UK address). UK eBay seller: These four Hulk issues were supposedly deposited on my mailbox a month ago, but I never saw them. On top of wasting my time writing here and there, calling DHL and visiting my post office, I had to order them again from the UK. #275 from the order below, the others from another vendor. The price of the books (and postage) were similar, but with customs I had to pay more for them, in the end. The Mantlo/Sal team is now represented by 22 Hulk comics in my collection. Bought on the 12th, shipped on the 16th, received on the 25th via Royal Mail Tracked & Signed + Correos. Comicana (18th order): It still doesn't seem right to place 90's comics in the "classic" category. I’ve been selling my Hulk run from 190-220’s lately. I have them all from 221 to the end.

So, you're holding on to the good ones?

I preferred Len Wein's writing to Bill Mantlo's. The issues in the 230s with pedestrian finished art by Mike Esposito, Jack Abel and Chic Stone were worst of all.

So, you're holding on to the good ones? No. They all have to go.

Wein had something going for him, he was solid. Both his ASM and Hulk runs are very consistent. But Mantlo actually had one story to tell, and he did towards the end of his tenure, when he put Banner in control. (Not the crossroads bit, mind you). Roger Stern, even at this early stage, was a better writer than Wein.

I was impressed with my last order from Lonestar....I could not understand why they graded books as VF because they looked NM to me, and also to the people I resold them too.

I did a mystery bundle of Captain America comics from them a few years ago that I was very pleased with (even ended up with a few issues of the original Invaders book from the 70's)

I was impressed with my last order from Lonestar....I could not understand why they graded books as VF because they looked NM to me, and also to the people I resold them too. I've gotten many comics which were rated VG, FN or VFN, which looked FN, VFN or NM respectively. Both from LS and from MH. My hypothesis is that when they have many copies of a particular issue at a high grade, the place some of them at lower grade/price point, to make it look more varied and give different costumers, with different "pockets" a buying opportunity. Over time, the higher grades might get sold, and they don't go trough their stock to raise the grade of the lower graded copies which are still left in their inventory.
With LS in particular, I find this to be somewhat corroborated, in the fact the the lowest priced comics ($2) can be of a NM, or VG grade, depending on that they have, from one issue to another, in a given series. Example: Next Men. Look at issues 23 & 24. Is there a reason for both to be priced the same at so different grades? None other than this is what they have and they don't charge less than $2 (offers aside). They probably sold the NM, VFN and FN copies for #23 progressively, but have not sold all the NM ones from #24. Notice how any issue price capped at $2 only offers one grade available. As soon as the current grade is sold out, a lower one will magically appear. Of course, all of them will be overgraded, as they probably bought a whole lot of them back in the day, at a high grade, and had to resort to that grading "scheme" in order to make it look "natural".

Long Beach Comic Con was this past weekend. It was a smallish show as it was blistering hot here but the heat brought that convention goers inside to the AC. I work with the Hero Initiative and we raised a nice chunk of change for comic creators. The few minutes here and there I got out, I went around the few Silver and Bronze age dealers that were there and found nothing. I did buy a piece of artwork from Howard Chaykin though, so that's a plus. But my mail call came in and got a nice piece of my undergrounds taken care of. California Comic #1. I'm happy. {Spoiler: Click to show}

In total, the 18 Hulk issues, bought this summer, have costed me 147.73€ with postage and customs. This is roughly twice what I paid for issues 272 & 297-299, bought a little over a year ago, back when Brexit still hadn't come in full swing. My next purchase will be at my LCS, no kidding!

The opened a new Ollie's on my drive to work, so I stopped in to check on the comic selection. It was nicely organized (having only been opened for about an hour). They only had maybe 20 different trades, but they were pretty good ones. I got the last TPB of Ennis' Hellblazer... the last two trades of Snyder's Batman... a Tomasi Superman trade that seems to have Jon in it still, and a Young Adult theme trade that looked interesting for under $20. They also had the first Fables volume (which I've seen at the other Ollie's in my area) and a few other Rebirth DC trades I already had from previous trips. Not much Marvel.... a Jane Foster era Thor trade and the Future Imperfect series from Secret Wars (which I picked up but put back down). They had some grab bags as well, but though I was tempted by the IDW ones (6.99 for 10 comics) I decided to pass since such things often live on the too ead pile for a long time.

My lcs (super Fly Comics and Games) is celebrating their 15th anniversary this year with a 25% off the entire store sale, so I took a ride out. I addition to stocking up on bags and boards and picking up my weekly pull, I snagged a half dozen issues of Uncle Scrooge to check off my list.. -M
