I loved Hawkworld. But I'm a big fan of Ostrander and Truman both. Likewise here as well. I think Ostrander's '90s Spectre series is the best written run of the character. Truman is also a good writer as well as artist, and aside from the obvious Scout series, his work on the various Jonah Hex Vertigo books is also notable. I re-read The Spectre pretty recently and it's still brilliant. If I didn't have so many other irons in the fire I'd consider a review thread of it. I first noticed Truman when he was doing illustrations of TSR before he really broke in to comics. I loved Ostrander and Truman together (with Mandrake on the last four issues) in The Kents.

Back from CGC. My oldest comic in my collection. The Barks story has been reprinted so I can read it whenever I want to.

Based on recent events in my life, I have decided that I'm done waiting to buy books until a store has a sale or if it's "the right price". If there is a book that I really want for my collection and I have the money available, I'm going to get it, because who knows if I or it will be there when the "time is right"?
To that end, I made a trip to the Strip District in Pittsburgh this morning on my bi-monthly coffee and tea run to my favorite shop, and while I was there, I swung by Eide's Entertainment, which is Pittsburgh's oldest (and still best) comic book shop. Picked up the following books from my ever-shrinking Want List.
Jonah Hex #91 - first time I've seen this in the wild in a long time. It's in really nice shape considering it has a white cover, and it was the last issue I needed to complete the series, so I can finally mark this one off my list and close the book on Jonah Hex.
Secret Society of Super-Villains #1 - this one is in a little lesser condition than the Jonah Hex, but the price was something I was willing to pay without really thinking too hard about it. I THINK I only need one more issue to complete the run, which they had in stock, but I wasn't 100% sure about that (the cover looked really familiar, like I already own it), so I held off and will get it next time I'm down there if I do actually need it.

My first issue of SSOSV was #2 and I bought every issue as soon as it came out. I got the first issue very soon after the second issue came out. My dad’s favorite used-book store had a small room in the back with three walls of magazine racks and it was all used comics, mostly from the previous five years with the occasional late-1960s treasure in an actual comic book bag, priced at $1.00. (That’s where I got my Spider-Man #99.)
Most of the comics were 2 for 25 cents. And it looked like somebody had bought SSOSV #1, read it once and immediately traded it for something else.
So I got my SSOSV #1 in near-mint condition for 12 1/2 cents.
I love that series. I still have all the original issues. I bought the two-volume trade hardback so I could read the issues that weren’t published because it was canceled.

Here are some books that arrived this week from various sources-- Ebay, Lone Star, and quite a few sourced for me by our very own Crimebuster (Thanks again, Scott!).
Added another issue of National Comics (circa 1947) in my efforts to complete a specialized short run of the series (all the issues containing Granny Gumshoe stories), as well as a wartime issue of Super Comics from 1944. And Doctor Solar #5 (first appearance in costume) finally completes the series for me... which was tougher than I thought it would be. Also completed the Red Wolf series with issue #2.
Overall though, the bulk of this haul is Charlton-centric as I continue to build my collection of the sprawling output of Derby, Connecticut. Lots and lots of covers and interior art by the likes of Ditko, Pat Boyett, Tom Sutton, Mike Zeck, Wayne Howard (whose art continues to amaze me in the spirit of EC artwork), Joe Staton and Dick Giordano. There's even a PAM (Pete Morisi) cover on Vengeance Squad #5.

Check out this ad from the Dazzler issue, oh the nostalgia this brings. I got that Death Star set for the holidays I think that very year, played with it endlessly. Still have all those figures and the pictured carrying case. I too used to have the Death Star set. I don't have it anymore but I do still have all of my action figures (though I lost most of the guns years ago) and while my father threw out all the spaceships and playsets many years ago, several years ago I bought the Cantina Set, a dewback, a troop transport, and a landspeeder on ebay.

Oh, that's so sweet you were able to pick those back up. Those were all so cool, there was a mix of some of those I had, and some when I played with other kids, but I remember them all. I did have the Cantina Set as well though, that was another absolute favorite.

On the left here is the Michelinie/McFarlane Omnibus with variant ASM#300 repro cover ( much as it would be cool if this was the actual issue), and then the X-Men volume adapts the "Pryde of the X-Men" animation pilot (which I still have on VHS!): What... you mean like this one?

One thing I loved about the Cantina Set I got back in the day (from Sears) is that it included the tall Snaggletooth in the blue outfit with silver boots. He was the rarest, and thus the most valuable, of the vintage Star Wars action figures - unless you were lucky enough to get a Boba Fett with a shooting rocket!

Oh yeah, you had the "grail" one for sure with the Sears version with blue Snaggletooth! Those sets go for big dollars today especially if it has the pegs intact along with Snaggletooth of course. I was one of those kids who sent away for Boba Fett with the promise of the shooting rocket, only to get what we all got. They did make some time back though a modern release with the original vintage mold and retro card, but with the rocket firing mechanism, so it was some small vindication after all these years to pick that up.

Minor pick up of some filler issues-when I stopped by my lcs yesterday, one of the dealers I trade with/buy from in the Gem City FB group who also frequents the store had dropped off a few books I had grabbed from one of his claim sales at the beginning of the month. Nothing major, just knocking 2 more off my list for DHP, a Space Ghost appearance, and a Harlan Ellison themed comic. I've got a pile o'stuff to pick up from Jesse himself, but these are the first books I have gotten in hand in the new year. -M

And that Space Ghost cover is great.
