Haven't made an "Acquisition Post" in this thread since January, mainly because I don't generally buy much in the first quarter of the year until I've paid the taxman his due.
However, that little matter is now in the rear view mirror, and I've made my first major acquisition of Spring.
A fellow collector (who also happens to be my bandmate/songwriting partner of 30 years) stumbled upon a very nice cache of bronze-age Charlton Horror/Mystery titles, and knowing that I collect them, he called me immediately. The deal was struck and the results are posted here.
While finding Charlton books in any decent condition is a major challenge, I was extremely pleased to find that most of these books are roughly 6.0 or higher in condition, with a couple coming in at 7.5-8.0 condition.
That really made my day.
Lots of great cover artists here, including Ditko, Aparo, Garcia-Lopez, Pat Boyette, Dick Giordano, Tom Sutton, and Rocco "Rocke" Mastroserio.

Hey tartanphantom, have you ever come across a story called 'Murder by Proxy' in one of those Charlton Horror comics?
I read that comic when I was in the hospital with a compound fracture and have always wanted to find it in a ghoulish sort of way but I was only around 9 at the time so things like comic title, issue number, even the cover completely elude me. But I remember that story very well. Some people were playing a creepy board game and when a player 'died' in the game, another character in the story would die in similar fashion. Some riveting reading for a little girl who read her very first Charlton comic....

Yes indeed. The story is actually called "Only a Game". The game referred to in the story is called "Murder by Proxy".
It appears in Scary Tales #14, cover dated May, 1978. Artwork is not credited, but it looks like possibly Vicente Alcazar to me.
"Only a Game" is the only first-run story in this issue. The remaining stories are reprints from earlier issues of "Haunted".

Awesome! Thanks so much for closure on this mystery, and I *will* be getting a copy after so, so long. Not that I'm that old *cough*

Of the strip artists for Tarzan, Manning is far and away my favorite.

When it comes to his black and white work for Warren and Marvel, Vicente Alcazar is one of those artists who can get me to buy a comic even if they only drew a few pages for it. I haven't seen enough of his colour comics work to know for sure if the same goes in that medium but I think it will.

Our oldest and still best comic shop in Pittsburgh, Eide's Entertainment, recently held their anniversary sale, and as I had not bought very much in the first quarter of the year, I decided to go and pick some things up to fill holes in the collection. Marvel back issues were 30% off, DC's were 50%. Here's the haul, which ran me just under $33: Lots of Scalphunter books, as I'm nearing the completion of the run. Just a few more to go. More Scalphunter, as well as the last SSoSV issue I needed. The Kull leaves me just two shy of the run, those being #1 and #2. Some upgrades for books in my collection that weren't quite up to my usual standards, especially the Captain America.

I'm a huge Jonah Hex fan, and have a complete collection of his appearances. However, just about everybody has heard of Hex, but few have heard of Scalphunter, aka Brian Savage. I also like the fact that in his Starman series, James Robinson retconned the relationship between Matt Savage, Brian Savage and Steve Savage (Balloon Buster). It's one of the few modern-day retcons that actually sounds feasible.

Gerber Defenders and Severins' Kull would be the highlights for me out of that haul.

Another haul of 31 Archies, mostly bronze age (pre 1979). Most are in the vicinity of VF (8.0 or better), one or two around 6.5.These take me past 1500+ in the Archie stash.

Ordered the second Starman Compenendium from an online seller in the UK (World of Books) a few weeks ago and it just arrived today: Here's the kicker: it's a used/like new copy and I paid GBP 11.22 for it total, i.e., the price of the book itself and postage. So almost 1,500 pages of comics for a little less than 14 US dollars according to the current exchange rate. I'm still in a state of disbelief about this, as the book was only recently released (sometime late last year) with a cover price of $60, and the otherwise cheapest copies from sellers like Amazon are never less than about $45 - before shipping.
