Back from Gem City. Got a bunch of $5 Silver and such books, one $10 book and a bunch of dollar bins dives. Here's the haul as a whole... These two books were form my friend Jesse who runs the show that I got from him in his FB auction group. I usually have more but he put the auctions on hiatus for most of June and all of July so he could focus on getting the show ready, and I had picked up a batch of books from him in May, so this was all I got form him in June before he went on hiatus-last issue of GLC and 1st Tim Drake in costume... One dealer I went to was having a Sunday deal-all wall books priced $30 and under were $10 and he had the last REH story in Marvel horror I needed in Chamber of Chills #2, one of the books I was looking for at today's show, so I snagged it. He also had $5 silver books, of which I got 2 Our Army at War issues with Kubert covers, and a bunch of dollar books. I'll do all the $1 stuff in a separate post, but here are those Rocks and the REH book... Another dealer was doing $5 Silver as well, but had a get 5 for $20 deal on them, so these were the 5 I got from him... I finally own a copy of poor Schatzi falling from the plane. The last two $5 books were these, bronze not Silver... The Unknown Solder was one of 4 I needed to complete the run and has a Hitler suicide cover so it can get pricey because of that, so I grabbed it while I could. Everything else was dollar bin fare, I'll cover that in a separate post once I get those pics uploaded. -M

Ok here's the dollar bin books.. Some Ordway Adventures of Superman... Some Batman books... I was looking for the 80s Blue Beetle series but I only found 1 issue in the dollar bins I hit... did a little better with Captain Atom... a Dagwood cover with Blondie in a red dress... More Flash, both Bronze and the Wally series... one Lois Lane... some misc, books including one of the Golden Legacy issues, the last of the shiny Avengers covers form that run, and a replacement copy of Amethyst 2, I had the rare 35 cent variant that I traded, so needed a copy of the regular cover instead. I needed 6 issues to complete my run of Nam, I found 3 of them... filling some holes on the '84 Baxter Titans series... and a handful of Uncle Scrooge issues off the list... and that's the Gem City haul this year. -M

These three books were high on my priority list for Gem City but I didn't find copies, so I sought them out in the week after. All three arrived in my mail box today. First up Ghost Rider #16. This completes my run of GR from #3-81, plus Spotlight 6-11. The remaining three (GR 1-2, Spotlight 5), are out of my price comfort range, so my GR run is now as complete as it will get. Next up Spirit Magazine #27 This was the last issue I needed to complete my run of the Warren/Kitchen Sink Spirit Magazine. These two popped up in a want list e-mail from Lone Star just before Gem City, but I waited to see if I could find them at the show first. I didn't, so I snagged these and a handful of $1 fillers (not pictured) the day after the show. Lastly, Blue Beetle #1 from '86. This book shot up when the Blue Beetle movie came out, and has come back down to earth. I am still working on this Beetle run, but I wanted to nab #1 while it was affordable, and I found several copies for a decent price on ebay. I watched them all and got offers from all the sellers, and this was the best deal of the bunch. Wasn't expecting to be getting back issues after the show, but these were kind of loose ends left over from the run up of the show that ended up pulling the trigger on after I couldn't find any of them there. -M

Not quote a purchase but all of you know of my binding project of comics from my collection. I'm proud to present the final volumes of my Covid binding project. The entire Ostrander/Mandrake run. Its without a doubt my all time favorite DC run. Doing what DC should've done in giving it the hardcover or omnibus treatment, here's 63 issues, including the annual. I used Mandrake's iconic covers as my covers just cleaned up and given a nice look to it. The backs are from my favorite covers of the covers collected in those particular volumes. The spines where the characters are come from Mandrake's various art; some of his prints he used to give out and trading cards he did for DC. (post 1 of 2)

Covers continued... Impulse volume 1- The Waid/Ramos run. Waid's tenure on the Flash books, to me, is the gold standard for the Scarlet Speedster. I never truly cared for Barry but appreciate him to give Waid a chance to give Wally West room to run. From there, the Flash family expanded and created Impulse. From Mike Wieringo's designs, Impulse got his monthtly. On whole I love the covers on Ramos' run, they're a bit cluttered. I've always loved the promo art for the book, so I uses that instead as my cover for the volme. The back cover is from a Ramos piece he drew for me back in 1995 on a Gen13 cover. It's perfect

Decided to go digging through some back issues and find some old comics to read. Went to my local LCS... Asked if they had back issues. They directed me to their "extensive" back issue section long boxes, with some dating as far back as 2015!
I left.

Doesn't event fit our classic comic cover contest requirement of being 10 years old...

After discussions last week with kirby101 about the pros and cons of the recent oversized Taschen reprints of the Lee/Ditko Spider-Man stories, I took the plunge and bought volume 1 in "as new", unread condition for the great price of £75 off eBay... Really looking forward to receiving this and getting stuck into re-reading some of my all-time favourite Spider-Man stories as they were originally published. Especially so now that jtrw2024 is doing his Spider-Man review thread.

Wow, that's pretty suggestive. I'm surprised they got away with that one.

But I think I have most of the early Spider-Man in one of the early reprint series, Marvel Tales, or whichever title it was, so I'll probably hold off for now. That Taschen looks good, though.

DC was shameless in selling sex. There's plenty of LL covers like this.

Yeah, I already own all these issues as well, as Marvel Tales reprints. But it's the fact that the pages of this book are photographed from pristine copies of the original comics, without any changing of the colours and including all the ads and letters pages, plus the bigger size, that is the draw for me.

Great price Confessor, I would be tempted to get V2 at that price. Yeah, I had read them all in Marvel Tales and a few ASM I owned. But this is a different experience. You can really study Ditko's art and design. And the original art to AAF #15 is a great bonus. Enjoy!
