I can't hate this costume. He generates his own bi lighting, too. Nice. One of my biggest collecting regrets: I bought the original for this page at a NYC con, but gave it to my friend who wasn't able to make it to the show.

Ugh, did JRJR draw that? He had a lot of terrible costume designs in his X-Men run...
As white hot as they were in the 80s, it was not a good decade for X-Men costumes. Wolverine's redesign was probably the best of that whole bunch, and all they did there was change the color of his tights. Wolverine's 80s costume is so much better than his 70s costume, so it was inexplicable when they brought back the 70s costume in the 90s. I like various 80s costumes. I think the Colossus belted collar tunic looks cool. You posted just about Rogue's worst 80s costume, but I like several of hers from the decade. The hooded one is nice. I really like the punk rock, multiple belted one, and also the more fitness/aerobics inspired one that followed (skintight black base layer with green top and bottom over it). I don't feel like I gauge which costumes are generally popular well. I love Havok's classic costume, but it seems some people really hate, I think mostly because of the head pieces. I think it's awesome. I love how it was rendered during his guest appearance in Incredible Hulk #150 (while X-Men was in reprints).

I love Havok's costume too. I was fascinated by the 2D look of the black suit with the concentric circles that seemed to never break up no matter how he was positioned.

Never understood any hate for Mr. Terrific's duds. Manly, yet dainty.

I always loved that effect. The headgear would look stupid in real life but I thought it was fine on the comics page.

Might as well say it, I dont think Luke Cage's 70s/80s outfit was that bad (did he ever use the steel tiara or chain belt as a weapon?), though it was obviously of the time and wouldnt work past that time period.

Which is why I say they should do a Luke Cage movie, set in the 70s, ala the Blaxploitation movie inspirations, like Shaft. In that environment, you can make that costume work. Especially if you have Antonio Fargas!

Not sure why but I always liked John Byrne's redesign of Hercules's costume

Isn't that actually the costume John Buscema gave Herc during Roger Stern's Avengers run? Byrne may have tweaked it a but, but...
Cei-U! I summon the sartorial splendor!

Another favorite: If Batman had aged like the rest of us... So Bruce Wayne was a red herring all along and Batman's true secret identity was either Walt Whitman or the Ayatollah Khomeini.

I thought DC editorial was crazy to rush to get rid of this costume: That Aquaman miniseries seemed to be a hot seller, and the radically different outfit must have been a key part of that. I thought it was terrific. For iconic looks I don't like... I thought the original look, with the big bare hands and feet, was way cooler than the animal look, but the animal look is the one that stuck.

I thought the original look, with the big bare hands and feet, was way cooler than the animal look, but the animal look is the one that stuck. I've never liked Aquaman or read this series or any other Aquaman comics that's by far the best version of the character I've ever seen as far as the visual design goes. I also agree about the Beast: the "new" look - yes, I still think of it as an unwise new innovation - is too much like a werewolf. IOW the imagery is more in tune with the horror genre than than superheroes. My guess is that whoever came up with the idea (was it Englehart? his instincts were usually more reliable) was misled by the character's name, "The Beast": I think the better response would have been to change the name, not to change the character's visual design to fit the name, which is what I imagine was the basic motivation behind it.
