Speaking as an artist, that particular Aquaman costume may look cool but would be a bitch to draw consistently panel to panel. I wouldn't want the assignment.

I also agree about the Beast: the "new" look - yes, I still think of it as an unwise new innovation - is too much like a werewolf. IOW the imagery is more in tune with the horror genre than than superheroes. My guess is that whoever came up with the idea (was it Englehart? his instincts were usually more reliable) was misled by the character's name, "The Beast": I think the better response would have been to change the name, not to change the character's visual design to fit the name, which is what I imagine was the basic motivation behind it. Monster comics were presumed to be the next big thing, hence Marvel's stampede of Tomb of Dracula, Monster of Frankenstein, Werewolf By Night, Man-Wolf, Morbius, Man-Thing, It! The Living Colossus, the Living Mummy, Scarecrow, Bloodstone, Ghost Rider, Son of Satan, all attempting to merge their successful superhero approach with the spooky stuff, one genre in which DC managed to consistently out-perform them, so that's probably the only reason that the Beast, of all the X-Men, got a shot at a solo series--the name suggested a transformation into yet another monster character. I do think "The Beast" is a strong character name to plaster on the cover of a 70's era comic, but that the original incarnation would have had even less success than the new version did, and I'm even quite fond of that Amazing Adventures run...I just miss the more subtle original depiction. I mean, a superhero whose most prominent feature is modestly oversized extremities? That's refreshing, in light of the over-exaggeration we were fated to get from there on out!

I don't have a dog in this fight, but the revised costume is certainly more effective underwater camouflage than the orange tunic. But, even practically, probably made it more difficult for the colorist to make him stand out on the page. Never read a story from this period, but always felt masked Dr. Strange was an abomination...

MDG , I might not go so far as abomination, 'cause as a superhero costume, that looked cool to me when I was a 14-year-old kid. But it was way inappropriate for Dr. Strange. I'm guessing the title was in trouble and they figured if they made him look more like a superhero, it might help. I guess it didn't.

Yes, yes and no; yes the title wasn't doing well, yes they though a more superhero look might help, no it didn't. Art is Gene Colan, so it is mighty nice!

Yeah, I think it's a cool design ' just not right for the character.
I've never liked Doctor Strange in superhero comics too much - even when written by a favourite writer like Steve Gerber in the Defenders. So it suddenly occurs to me that they might have made use of this re-design for the superhero appearances and keep the old one for Doctor Strange's own series set in its own universe. Of course that would mean having two separate characters with separate storylines, even perhaps separate fictional universes, something Marvel would never have gone for.

I loved Unicorns costume. The horn, the green and orange, the thigh high boots, and of course the Siloette of the unicorn

Me too, but when I try to picture it in my mind I think this positive feeling derives from one specific comic, I think drawn by Keith Giffen but I can't recall any other details at the moment.

Unicorn's third costume, the one with the aforementioned thigh-high boots, debuted in Iron Man #113, an issue with art by Herb Trimpe, Keith Pollard and Josef Rubinstein. Giffen drew the following issue, which may be why you associate him with 'corny's new look (though he still could've designed it for all I know).
Cei-U! I summon the revamp!

I I never got the point of Rage as a character, and the costume did not help.

And the leather jacket look for the Avengers is another horrible looks.

I've never understood why people have a problem with the jackets. They're completely inoffensive as far as redesigns go. I bought the Avengers at the time because of the Epting and Palmer artwork. I was quite into the DeFalco/Paul Ryan Fantastic Four as well, and Mark Bagley Amazing Spider-Man.

Well for one thing they don't go with the rest of their costumes, and wearing a jacket over a suit of armor looks silly.

I think the leather jacket ensemble could work for certain Avengers lineups ... but not that one ... and the artist needs to revise the costumes to accommodate the jackets, not just hang a jacket over a bunch of original costumes which never needed them in the past.

There was an actual storyline for wearing the jackets at first. Then they kind of morphed into a casual uniform. Personally, as a kid, they drew my attention on the newsstands after several years of the Avengers being a fairly easy title to ignore. Considering the era, they were fairly tame. I liked the Fantastic Four's jackets too, fwiw. I guess I just like jackets.
